A FedEx cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Saturday morning after its engine caught fire mid-flight—an intense moment that was captured in dramatic video footage.

According to a FedEx spokesperson, Flight 3609 had just taken off from Newark Liberty International Airport, bound for Indianapolis, when disaster struck. At approximately 8:07 AM local time, the aircraft reportedly collided with a bird, causing significant damage that led to a fire in one of its engines.

Emergency Declared as Fire Erupts Mid-Flight

Eyewitness footage circulating on social media shows the terrifying scene as the plane prepared for its emergency landing. In the video, thick plumes of smoke and flames can be seen billowing from the right engine while the aircraft banks sharply in an attempt to return to the airport.

The dramatic moment unfolded in the skies over Newark, with bystanders on the ground witnessing the fiery descent. Some reported hearing a loud explosion, which coincided with the moment the engine ignited.

    Quick Thinking Saves the Day

Despite the dangerous situation, the flight crew acted swiftly and professionally, managing to guide the aircraft safely back to the runway. FedEx later confirmed that the pilots declared an emergency immediately after the bird strike and were able to return to Newark without further incident.

“We are thankful for the quick actions of our crew and first responders,” a FedEx spokesperson told TMZ.

    Airport Operations Temporarily Disrupted

In the wake of the emergency, air traffic at Newark Liberty International Airport was briefly halted as a precautionary measure. However, flight operations resumed shortly after, with online tracking data confirming that normal service was restored.

    No Reported Injuries

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the crew, and the plane landed without any additional complications. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of the damage to the aircraft, but an investigation is likely to follow to assess the impact of the bird strike and the subsequent fire.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that birds can pose to aircraft, even in modern aviation. While bird strikes are not uncommon, they rarely result in such dramatic in-flight emergencies.

As aviation officials review the case, FedEx and airport authorities will undoubtedly take additional precautions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
