Jay-Z and J. Cole have stepped forward in support of Lil Durk, submitting letters to a federal judge as the Chicago rapper continues fighting for release from custody while awaiting trial on a remaining racketeering charge.
The two music heavyweights reportedly sent formal letters to U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald ahead of a bond review hearing scheduled for November 4.
Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, remains in federal custody despite recently being acquitted of charges in a separate high-profile murder-for-hire trial involving the 2022 killing of a man connected to rival rapper Quando Rondo.
His legal team is now seeking to convince the court that he can be released while his remaining case proceeds.

Jay-Z Praises Lil Durk’s Character and Community Work
In his letter, Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, reportedly described Banks as disciplined, respectful and committed to helping people from his community.
Carter recalled meeting the rapper several years ago and said he found him to be kind and respectful.
He also highlighted Durk’s efforts to create opportunities for young artists through his music business.
“Durk was signing young artists from his community to recording contracts and giving them a real path into a legitimate industry,” Carter wrote.
Jay-Z further argued that Banks understood the limited opportunities available to young people growing up in high-risk neighbourhoods and used his success to help others pursue legitimate careers.

J. Cole Highlights Their Grammy-Winning Collaboration
J. Cole also submitted a letter focusing on his professional relationship with Durk, particularly their collaboration on the 2023 hit All My Life.
The North Carolina rapper reportedly described the song’s message of peace and personal growth as evidence of Durk’s maturity.
Cole said Banks pushed for the track to maintain its positive direction, even when that approach differed from the instincts of more experienced collaborators.
The song went on to become a major career moment for both artists, earning them a Grammy Award.
Lil Durk’s Legal Team Proposes Major Bond Package
Durk’s attorneys, Brian Steel and Drew Findling, have proposed a substantial bond package in an effort to secure his release.
According to the report, the proposal includes using the rapper’s future music royalties, touring income and rights to his name, image and likeness as collateral.
The defence argues that putting those valuable assets at risk would give Banks a strong incentive to comply with any release conditions.
However, prosecutors have previously described the rapper as a flight risk and continue to oppose his release.
Although Durk was acquitted in the murder-for-hire case, he still faces a charge under the federal Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering Activity (VICAR) statute.
His remaining racketeering trial is scheduled to begin in August 2027.
With Jay-Z and J. Cole now adding their voices to the defence’s efforts, the upcoming bond proceedings represent another important stage in Durk’s ongoing legal battle.
