Janet Jackson is missing from the latest Why Did I Get Married? movie, but Tyler Perry says there’s no drama behind her absence.
The writer-director addressed Jackson’s noticeable absence from the new installment, which premiered on Netflix on September 9 and reunites much of the franchise’s original cast.
Jackson famously played Dr. Patricia Agnew in the first two films, making her absence one of the first things longtime fans noticed.
According to Perry, however, the decision came down to something much less dramatic: scheduling.
“At the time, she was doing her residency in Vegas, so we couldn’t work out the time,” Perry said during a recent interview with Culture Creators.
That explanation puts to rest speculation that Jackson’s absence was the result of a falling-out with Perry or the franchise.
And Perry isn’t closing the door on a return.
“Who knows what could happen in the future,” he said, leaving open the possibility that Dr. Patricia could eventually reunite with her friends in another chapter.
The latest movie arrives nearly two decades after Why Did I Get Married? debuted in 2007. Its sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, followed in 2010.
The new installment brings back the core ensemble while also adding Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson to the cast.
The franchise follows a close-knit group of college friends as they navigate marriages, relationship problems and the complications that come with growing older together. Jackson’s Patricia became one of the central characters across the first two films.
Perry confirmed development of the third movie last July after years of fans asking for another installment.
The new film has already generated attention on social media and has been trending on Netflix as viewers reconnect with the characters.
For now, though, Patricia Agnew is sitting this chapter out.
If another sequel happens — and Perry’s comments suggest the possibility isn’t off the table — Janet Jackson could still find her way back into the story.
