Eminem Eyes WNBA Team Ownership—Detroit’s Bid Gains Star Power!

Detroit may soon have a WNBA team again, and rap legend Eminem could be part of the ownership group making it happen. According to TMZ Sports, the Lose Yourself hitmaker is in early discussions to join a bid for a WNBA expansion team in his hometown.

A spokesperson for Eminem confirmed that while nothing is official yet, the rapper is seriously considering the opportunity. Detroit has already submitted its proposal, backed by notable sports figures including NFL quarterback Jared Goff, NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill, and former Pistons star Chris Webber. If Eminem joins the bid, it would add significant star power to Detroit’s case.

WNBA Expansion: Where Does Detroit Stand?

The WNBA currently has 13 teams, but that number will rise to 15 by 2026, with Portland and Toronto joining the league. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has confirmed plans to add at least one more team by 2028, and Detroit is one of the leading contenders.

However, the city faces strong competition from other hopefuls, including:

    • Austin
    • Charlotte
    • Cleveland
    • Houston
    • Kansas City – backed by NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes

With competition heating up, Eminem’s involvement could give Detroit a major advantage. His deep-rooted connection to the city and global influence could help secure sponsorships, boost ticket sales, and enhance the team’s visibility.

Eminem’s Detroit Legacy & Potential Impact

Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, has long been an ambassador for Detroit. From his music to his business ventures, he’s always put the Motor City on the map. If he joins the ownership bid, it would be another major investment in the city’s sports and entertainment scene.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is expected to make a final decision within the next year. If Detroit wins the bid, it would mark the return of a WNBA team to the city for the first time since the Detroit Shock relocated to Tulsa (now the Dallas Wings) in 2009.

With Eminem potentially stepping into the sports world, could we see him become the next big celebrity team owner? Stay tuned as this story develops!
