If you ask Swizz Beatz what keeps his marriage thriving, he’ll tell you it’s all about minimizing arguments. The renowned producer, who’s been married to Alicia Keys since 2010, recently opened up about his relationship philosophy during an interview with US Weekly.

“Marriage is definitely a big word, but look at it like your best friend. The communication is there. We’ve never had an argument,” Swizz explained. “Since we’ve been together, our kids [have] never seen it; never seen us raise our voice [or] never seen us yell. Never seen us curse at each other. Why? Because of communication.”
The key to their peaceful relationship, Swizz says, is communication and expressing themselves without resorting to yelling or cursing. Instead of letting disagreements turn into heated arguments, the couple commits to addressing issues calmly and respectfully.
“When you yell at each other, no one is really listening anyway. Nothing gets solved in each other’s yelling,” he added.
Respecting Individuality in the Marriage
Swizz also believes that giving each other the freedom to be themselves is essential to their lasting bond. He explained that many couples make the mistake of treating their partner like property instead of respecting them as independent individuals.
“People think they can own people. You can’t. It’s not property that you own. There’s a whole human, right? So, we’re very clear on that. She’s her own boss. I’m my own boss,” Swizz said. “That’s how we make magic when we come together. I think that helps because people start getting very territorial and making their partner property, and I think that’s the biggest mistake.”
