Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has smashed her own fundraising record, bringing in a jaw-dropping $9.6 million during the first quarter of 2025—more than double her previous best and catapulting her into the top tier of political fundraisers nationwide.
The massive haul was revealed in a Federal Election Commission filing submitted Tuesday and is already stoking speculation about a potential 2028 primary challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
With over $8 million in campaign cash now on hand, Ocasio-Cortez is flexing serious political muscle—backed by a deep well of grassroots support and a growing national presence.
Progressive Momentum and Grassroots Power
Much of the congresswoman’s fundraising success stems from her joint “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders, which has drawn enthusiastic crowds and further cemented her role as a leading voice in the progressive movement.
Her campaign says 64% of donations came from first-time contributors, with an average gift of just $21. Notably, no contributions came from corporate PACs or lobbyists, with most donors identifying as teachers and nurses—a clear nod to her base of working-class supporters.
Campaign manager Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben credited the surge to grassroots enthusiasm and nationwide organizing efforts:
“This quarter proves that working people are ready to take back power.”
From the Bronx to a Bigger Stage?
In a message to supporters, Ocasio-Cortez expressed deep gratitude:
“I cannot convey enough how grateful I am to the millions supporting us with your time, resources, and energy. Your support has allowed us to rally people together at record scale to organize their communities.”
The new numbers blow past her previous high of $4.4 million, raised during the summer of 2020. With progressive leaders urging her to consider a Senate run, speculation continues to grow about her next move.

While Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t confirmed any plans to challenge Schumer, allies on the left are increasingly vocal.
Faiz Shakir, a senior adviser to Bernie Sanders, called the donation surge “a message to Democrats about the direction voters want.”
