Renowned singer and pastor Montell Jordan, best known for his chart-topping hit “This Is How We Do It”, has opened up about his battle with prostate cancer and the crucial role early detection played in saving his life.

Speaking to TMZ Hip-Hop, the 56-year-old shared how faith, proactive health care, and early diagnosis helped him overcome the diagnosis he received in January.

“You wanna catch it before it catches you,” Jordan emphasized, urging men to pay closer attention to their bodies.

A Life-Saving Diagnosis

On his 56th birthday, December 3, Montell revealed via video message that he had been diagnosed with “early Stage 1” prostate cancer earlier this year. He credits early detection and his unwavering faith for guiding him through his healing journey.

“Early detection helped save my life,” he wrote in the heartfelt message, adding that he has been chronicling his experience to inspire others.

After carefully reviewing his options and “praying hard,” Jordan chose to undergo a prostatectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the prostate.

Unexpected Challenges and Recovery

Post-surgery, doctors discovered that the cancer was more aggressive than initially thought, reaching Stage 2 before it was completely removed.

“Once [his prostate was] removed, there was more cancer found in what was removed,” Jordan shared in his video. “It was more aggressive and was undetected. It was more like Stage 2, but they got it all.”

Jordan is now cancer-free and attributes his recovery to both early detection and his faith.

“Jesus saved my soul. Early detection helped save my life. I am now cancer-free,” he added.

A New Mission as a Pastor and Advocate

Since his recovery, Montell has felt a renewed sense of purpose in his role as a pastor, helping others navigate life’s challenges with compassion and understanding.

“I’m pastoring different people right now. Pastoring is loving people. We’re all in the same story, but we’re in different boats,” he explained.

Jordan also shared a powerful reminder for men about the importance of proactive health care:

“You can either check or you gon’ get checked. It’s gonna happen either way. You can be in control of it though.”

Inspiring Others to Share Their Stories

Jordan’s openness about his journey joins the growing list of high-profile figures advocating for cancer awareness. NFL legend Randy Moss also recently revealed his cancer diagnosis and recovery, celebrating his status as a survivor after undergoing surgery.

“It was a trying week, a trying time. So once again, I thank you all,” Moss shared in a livestream. “I’m back here with my family, and I’m grateful.”
