After nearly three decades of leading the San Antonio Spurs, legendary head coach Gregg Popovich has officially stepped down from his role following a series of health scares, including a mild stroke last November and a recent medical emergency at a local restaurant.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his health issues, the five-time NBA champion coach held an emotional press conference on Monday. Flanked by franchise legends Manu Ginóbili and Tim Duncan, Popovich expressed deep gratitude to the organization and confirmed that he is recovering—just not quickly enough to continue in his demanding role.

“Things are getting better by the day,” said Popovich, “but it’s not good enough for what we have planned ahead.”

The 76-year-old coach decided it was time for a new leader to step forward—and officially introduced Mitch Johnson as the next head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Johnson, who served under Popovich and stepped in during his absence last season, was praised by Pop for his unwavering dedication and performance under pressure.

“Mitch is more than capable. He gives 100% every day, and that’s exactly what this team needs moving forward,” Popovich said.

A Legacy of Leadership and Loyalty

Popovich spent the bulk of his speech reflecting on his storied 29-year coaching career, during which he transformed the Spurs into one of the most respected franchises in professional sports. He didn’t just mention the stars—though Duncan, Ginóbili, and Tony Parker were cornerstones of his dynasty—but also took the time to acknowledge coaches, staff, in-game entertainers, and even ticket salespeople who were part of the journey.

“We all have a part in this,” he said, highlighting the Spurs’ deeply rooted culture of unity and excellence.

Pop also thanked his medical team and rehab staff, some of whom were in attendance at the press conference, and emphasized their role in his ongoing recovery.

    A Humble Exit—and a Lighthearted Beginning

Though his retirement from coaching marks the end of an era, Popovich is far from walking away from basketball entirely. He will now take on a new role as the President of Basketball Operations for the Spurs—a position he embraced with characteristic humor.

In a playful moment that drew laughter from the room, Popovich removed his track jacket to reveal a custom t-shirt that read “El Jefe” and “Señor Popovich, President of Basketball Ops.”

The symbolic passing of the torch concluded with a warm hug between Pop and Johnson, signaling a heartfelt transition and the dawn of a new era for San Antonio basketball.

    Mitch Johnson: The Next Chapter

Mitch Johnson, a former player and long-serving assistant coach, now steps into one of the NBA’s most prestigious coaching roles. Johnson filled in admirably during Popovich’s absence last season, guiding the team through a challenging period with composure and leadership. His appointment reflects the Spurs’ commitment to continuity, development, and nurturing homegrown talent—values that Popovich instilled throughout his tenure.

As Johnson begins his new chapter at the helm, he carries with him the blueprint of Popovich’s legacy—discipline, humility, and teamwork.

    Conclusion: A Coach’s Goodbye, A President’s Hello

Gregg Popovich may be retiring from the sidelines, but his presence will remain deeply woven into the fabric of the Spurs organization. His decision to step aside was not only a reflection of his health status but also his enduring wisdom—knowing when the team needs fresh energy and when it’s time to empower the next generation.

As “El Jefe” moves upstairs to oversee basketball operations, Spurs fans can look forward to a future built on the same foundation of excellence and character that defined his legendary coaching career.
