Meet Pope Leo XIV: Robert Prevost Becomes First American Elected as Leader of the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has entered a new era. For the first time in history, an American-born cardinal has been elected as pope. Robert Francis Prevost, a native of Chicago, made his debut as the 267th pope, stepping out onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday evening to greet a sea of faithful gathered in Vatican City.

Moments before, the world saw the telltale signs of a papal election — white smoke billowing from the Sistine Chapel chimney, and the ringing of bells — signaling that the College of Cardinals had successfully selected a new spiritual leader through a two-thirds majority vote after just two days of deliberations.

A New Papal Name: Leo XIV

Upon stepping onto the balcony, Prevost announced his papal name: Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time in nearly a century that the name “Leo” has been chosen, following in the footsteps of Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903.

    Dual Citizenship: American-Born, Peruvian Citizen

While born and raised in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is a naturalized citizen of Peru, where he served for years as a missionary and later as the Bishop of Chiclayo. He also held the role of Prior General of the Augustinian Order, showcasing a lifelong dedication to religious service and theological scholarship.

Prevost became a cardinal in 2023, appointed by Pope Francis, and is widely seen as a strong supporter of Francis’ progressive reforms within the Church — especially concerning governance, social issues, and inclusivity.

???????? Reaction from the U.S. and Around the Globe

U.S. President Donald Trump was among the first global figures to congratulate the newly elected pope, posting a message of support on Truth Social shortly after Leo XIV’s first appearance.

However, the new pope may not align politically with the current U.S. administration. Just this past February, Prevost retweeted an article from The National Catholic Reporter that challenged the views of Senator J.D. Vance, suggesting the new pontiff favors a more compassionate, globalist outlook rooted in Christian teaching.

A Life of Learning and Leadership

Pope Leo XIV was ordained a priest in 1982 and has served in numerous roles within the Church. Most recently, he was the Prefect for the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing episcopal appointments across the globe. He also served as President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Villanova University, as well as a diploma in theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

    Moving Forward After Pope Francis

The election of Pope Leo XIV comes in the wake of Pope Francis’ passing last month, which set the wheels in motion for a papal conclave. Over 100 cardinals from around the world convened in Vatican City to select the next Bishop of Rome, culminating in Thursday’s historic announcement.

With his unique background bridging North and South America, Leo XIV’s papacy could usher in a globally-minded era for the Church — balancing traditional doctrine with contemporary challenges.
