The tragic death of Robert Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in upstate New York, has sparked outrage and raised critical questions about the conduct of state corrections officers. According to a preliminary autopsy report, Brooks died from asphyxia due to neck compression during a violent altercation with prison staff on December 10. The attack, captured on bodycam footage worn by staff, shows Brooks being viciously beaten while restrained and gagged. This disturbing incident has brought to light not only the fatal abuse Brooks suffered but also the substantial salaries earned by the corrections employees involved.

A Disturbing and Deadly Assault

Robert Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for felony assault at Marcy Correctional Facility when the incident occurred. What followed was a merciless beating by a group of corrections officers and other prison workers. The bodycam footage, which has been made public by the New York State Attorney General’s office, shows the brutality of the attack, where Brooks was restrained and gagged while being assaulted by staff members.

The cause of death, as confirmed by the preliminary autopsy, was asphyxia caused by compression of the neck during the violent altercation. This revelation has sparked a wave of anger and calls for accountability, as the use of excessive force in correctional facilities has long been a controversial issue.

High Salaries of Corrections Employees

One of the most shocking revelations in the aftermath of this incident is the six-figure salaries earned by some of the corrections officers involved in the attack. According to state employee compensation records obtained by TMZ, eight of the fourteen workers employed at Marcy Correctional Facility earn six-figure salaries. These figures are alarming, especially in light of the brutal nature of the incident that led to Brooks’ death.

The compensation data reveals that several officers earned substantial salaries in 2022 or 2023, including:

  • Sergeant Glenn Trombly: $149,185
  • Officer David Kingsley II: $147,745
  • Officer Matthew Galliher: $114,375
  • Sergeant Michael Marshaw: $105,672
  • Officer Christopher Walrath: $113,969
  • Officer Nicholas Kieffer: $118,151
  • Officer Anthony Farina: $142,528
  • Nurse Kyle Dashnaw: $110,087

These high salaries stand in stark contrast to the disturbing events that transpired inside the facility. Even more concerning is the fact that despite the gravity of the situation, a number of the officers continued to be paid substantial amounts for their roles in the institution, leading to questions about the lack of oversight and accountability.

While six other corrections employees earn less than $100,000, they still enjoy relatively high pay, with salaries ranging from $70,423 to $89,248. The discrepancy in pay raises concerns about the priorities of the corrections department, as high-ranking officials continue to be compensated generously despite their involvement in an incident of this magnitude.

The Fallout: Suspensions and Resignations

In the wake of Robert Brooks’ tragic death, 13 of the employees involved in the violent incident have been suspended without pay, pending further investigations. The nurse who was present during the altercation, Kyle Dashnaw, has also been placed on suspension. However, Officer Anthony Farina, who was reportedly involved in the attack, has already resigned from his position.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a statement calling for swift action in the wake of Brooks’ death. The governor has instructed Corrections Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello to begin the process of firing the remaining corrections officers who were involved in the assault. The state’s swift response underscores the seriousness with which the government is treating the incident, and it is likely that further legal action will follow as the investigation continues.

The Broader Issue of Prison Abuse

The death of Robert Brooks highlights a broader issue of abuse within the prison system. Despite ongoing efforts to reform correctional facilities and hold staff accountable for their actions, incidents of excessive force continue to be reported across the country. This tragic case is not an isolated event, and it serves as a painful reminder of the challenges faced by those incarcerated, as well as the need for systemic change in the way prisons are managed.

Prison reform advocates argue that incidents like Brooks’ death underscore the importance of implementing stronger oversight, more comprehensive training for corrections officers, and clearer standards of conduct within the prison system. Ensuring that those who are entrusted with the care and custody of inmates are held accountable for their actions is essential to preventing further tragedies from occurring.

Moving Forward: Calls for Justice

As the investigation into Robert Brooks’ death continues, there are growing calls from the public for justice to be served. Advocates for prison reform, as well as the families of inmates who have experienced similar abuses, are demanding that those responsible for the violent assault be held accountable and that meaningful reforms be implemented to prevent future incidents.

The outcome of this case will likely set a precedent for how the justice system handles incidents of abuse within correctional facilities. Whether or not the New York State Department of Corrections takes adequate steps to address these issues will determine the future of prison reform in the state and across the nation.

Call to Action: What do you think should happen to those responsible for Robert Brooks’ death? How can the prison system address issues of abuse and ensure accountability for correctional officers? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
