Cops Say No Crime in Jeff Sperbeck’s Death During Golf Cart Ride with John Elway

Authorities have concluded that the tragic death of NFL agent Jeff Sperbeck—who fell from a golf cart being driven by NFL legend John Elway—was nothing more than a heartbreaking accident.

According to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, after a full investigation, including interviews with everyone present during the incident on April 26, there’s no indication of criminal wrongdoing.

“There is no evidence or statement to indicate this is anything more than a tragic accident,” Bianco told TMZ Sports.

    What Happened on April 26?

The incident took place in the upscale golf community of La Quinta, California. John Elway was driving a golf cart with his close friend and longtime agent Jeff Sperbeck, along with their wives and Johnny Bananas, a reality TV star known for his time on MTV.

While riding, Sperbeck reportedly fell off the back of the cart, suffering serious injuries. Despite medical personnel arriving quickly on the scene, the 62-year-old sadly succumbed to his injuries four days later on April 30. A coroner ruled his cause of death as accidental blunt head trauma.

Media Attention Triggered a Police Probe

Initially, the event wasn’t treated as suspicious. In fact, first responders at the time didn’t suspect foul play. However, the sheriff’s office launched a formal investigation only after widespread media attention and public concern.

Bianco confirmed that officers canvassed the area and contacted all nearby residents to collect possible video footage of the golf cart’s route. With no evidence of negligence or intent, the case has been ruled an accident, though technically remains open for procedural reasons.

Elway and Sperbeck’s Families Mourn Together

John Elway broke his silence in a statement on April 30, calling himself “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by the tragic loss.

Sperbeck’s family also released a heartfelt message:

“We are grieving this unimaginable loss as a family alongside our dearest friends the Elways… We are grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support.”

A Career and Friendship Cut Short

Jeff Sperbeck was well-respected in the NFL community, representing numerous players and developing a decades-long friendship with John Elway. Together, they worked on several business ventures, including the 7Cellars wine label.

The bond between them, both professional and personal, makes the tragedy even more profound. What began as a casual ride around a familiar golf course among friends turned into a devastating loss no one could have predicted.

    Bottom line?
The sheriff’s office has found no indication of foul play, closing the door on speculation and confirming what friends and family had hoped—that Jeff Sperbeck’s death was a tragic accident, not a criminal event.
