Get ready for more chaos, laughs, and heart.
Sony Pictures has officially greenlit a sequel to One of Them Days, the breakout buddy comedy that surprised critics and audiences alike with its mix of big laughs and real emotion. Released earlier this year by TriStar Pictures, the original film earned over $50 million worldwide—an impressive feat for a mid-budget theatrical comedy in today’s streaming-first world.

Now, Keke Palmer and SZA are both expected to return, bringing their unmatched chemistry back to the screen for a second round of unpredictable urban misadventure.

What Made One of Them Days a Hit?

Set in Los Angeles, the first film followed Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA)—lifelong friends and roommates who scramble to save their home after Alyssa’s unreliable boyfriend loses their rent money. With eviction looming, the two embark on a wild, 24-hour hustle packed with unpredictable missteps, emotional revelations, and laugh-out-loud twists.

Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, the film hit a cultural nerve. Audiences praised it for capturing the anxiety of adulting, the power of Black female friendship, and the often absurd line between survival and self-discovery.

The Sequel: Same Magic, Bigger Stakes?

Plot details for the sequel are still under wraps, but sources say the story will continue to explore the lives of Dreux and Alyssa as they face a new chapter of adulthood—complete with fresh challenges, deeper friendship dynamics, and plenty of unexpected turns.

With the original creative team returning—Lamont as director and Singleton on script—the film promises to deliver the same signature blend of absurd comedy, cultural commentary, and emotional depth.

“Keke and SZA were magic together,” one insider noted. “This sequel isn’t just a follow-up—it’s a leveling up.”

A Strong Supporting Cast & Visionary Production Team

Part of the original’s charm was its stellar ensemble cast, including:

    • Lil Rel Howery
    • Janelle James
    • Katt Williams
    • Keyla Monterroso Mejia
    • Maude Apatow

These supporting characters added color, chaos, and authenticity—creating a vibrant, fully realized world that viewers connected with.

Behind the scenes, the film was a product of Sony’s CoCre Lab, an initiative designed to support emerging screenwriters of color and center culturally rich, original storytelling. Produced by Issa Rae and Sara Diya Rastogi (Hoorae), Deniese Davis (ColorCreative), and Charles D. King (Macro), the film was praised for being both funny and socially resonant.

    Critical Acclaim & Cultural Impact

Critics lauded the film’s fresh take on friendship and millennial survival. Writing for The Hollywood Reporter, Lovia Gyarkye described it as:

“The kind of big-laughs, mid-budget theatrical comedy that used to be more common.”

It hit especially hard with audiences craving more original, diverse stories that mix hilarity with heart. Viewers applauded SZA’s stunning dramatic debut, while Palmer proved—once again—why she remains a multi-hyphenate force in Hollywood.

Keke Palmer & SZA: The Duo We Didn’t Know We Needed

Their electric chemistry first sparked on a 2022 episode of Saturday Night Live, where fans saw a glimpse of what this pairing could deliver. The film took that spark and turned it into gold, balancing Palmer’s comedic timing with SZA’s subtle intensity.

Palmer, whose recent credits include Nope, Hustlers, and the upcoming The Pickup with Eddie Murphy, has become a go-to talent for mixing comedy with charisma. SZA, fresh off her Grammy-nominated album Saturn, surprised fans and critics alike with a breakout acting performance.

    What’s Next?

Production on the sequel is expected to begin later this year, with new cast announcements on the way. While no official release date has been confirmed, fans can expect the sequel to drop sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

Whether the story picks up right after the events of the first film or jumps ahead in time, one thing is clear: One of Them Days is now more than just a sleeper hit—it’s a growing franchise with bold storytelling, iconic characters, and a unique voice.

    Why the Sequel Matters

In an era when mid-budget comedies rarely get theatrical attention, One of Them Days proved there’s still a massive appetite for authentic, funny, emotionally grounded stories—especially when they reflect the lived experiences of Black women and young creatives navigating real-world chaos.

With a second film on the horizon, Palmer and SZA are building something bigger: a comedy legacy with cultural weight.
