“They’re Erasing Our Footprints”—The Mogul Warns Against Black History Suppression While Uplifting A Community Under Fire

Tyler Perry turned the 2025 BET Awards into more than a celebration—it became a stage for truth, resistance, and inspiration.

The media mogul and cultural icon delivered one of the most impassioned speeches of the night, tearing into the erasure of Black history in modern America and calling out Donald Trump by name for overseeing policies and rhetoric that silence Black voices.

While standing beneath the bright lights of L.A.’s Peacock Theater, Perry didn’t mince words.

“They Are Removing Our Books” — Perry’s Sobering Message

Perry began his speech with a heartwarming anecdote about walking on the beach with his son, creating footprints in the sand. But that tender moment quickly evolved into a scorching political metaphor.

“They are removing our books from libraries, they are removing our stories and our history, they are removing our names from government buildings,” he said, pausing as the audience fell silent.
“It’s as if someone wants to erase our footprints.”

In that single, emotional line, Tyler Perry called out the disturbing trend of book bans, curriculum censorship, and cultural whitewashing that’s become increasingly prevalent in conservative states.

Historic Reminder: The Tulsa Massacre & Black Wall Street

To underscore the long history of repression, Perry reminded everyone of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the most violent episodes of racial terror in American history—where thriving Black businesses were burned to the ground and hundreds were killed.

“This has happened before. They’ve tried to wipe us out before. But still, we rise.”

His words hit hard, serving as both a warning and a call to arms: The fight against erasure is not new—but it’s far from over.

Calling Out Hollywood: “I’ve Made More Black Billionaires Than Any Studio”

Perry also turned his attention to Hollywood gatekeepers, proudly declaring that his work has done more to elevate Black wealth than the traditional studio system ever has.

“I have made more Black billionaires—hear me when I say this—than any studio in this city combined. Because I’m making footprints.”

From Madea to Tyler Perry Studios—he’s built an empire, and he’s using that platform to push back against both systemic racism and performative inclusion

“Don’t Let Anybody Stop You” — Uplifting A Community in Crisis

Despite the heavy themes, Perry’s message ended on a note of hope, resilience, and action.

“This is not the time to give up. This is the time to dig in and keep leaving footprints everywhere you go.”

He urged anyone building a dream—whether struggling with a small business or crafting their first screenplay—to keep going.

“Don’t let anybody stop you. You can do it.”

A Night of Raw Emotion and Real Talk at the 2025 BET Awards

Tyler Perry wasn’t alone in using his platform for activism.

    ???? Doechii

The rising star blasted Donald Trump for using military force on protesters in L.A. amid the chaos surrounding ICE raids.

“Look outside,” she screamed. “We’re being silenced again, and we will not stand for it.”

    ???? Jamie Foxx

In another tear-jerking moment, Jamie Foxx accepted the Ultimate Icon Award, breaking down in tears as he reflected on his near-death experience after his 2023 stroke.

“I’m lucky to be alive. And I’m grateful to still be standing here with y’all tonight.”

    A Celebration With Purpose

The 2025 BET Awards proved once again why it’s not just entertainment—it’s empowerment. It’s culture, courage, and community.

Whether calling out presidential policies, lifting up Black excellence, or honoring survivors like Foxx, the night reminded viewers that the fight for visibility and equity is far from over.
