A peaceful protest turned violent in Salt Lake City over the weekend when gunfire broke out during a “No Kings” demonstration, leaving two people hospitalized and resulting in three arrests, according to police.

    Shots Fired at Peaceful Demonstration

Salt Lake City Police say officers on duty heard multiple gunshots ring out on Saturday night near Pioneer Park, where thousands of demonstrators had gathered. The protest was part of the national “No Kings” movement, which challenges the policies of President Donald Trump and advocates for immigrant rights and democratic values.

Authorities confirmed that one person was critically injured and rushed to a local hospital. The suspected shooter, who had reportedly been walking among the protesters before opening fire, was also injured and later taken into custody. He remains hospitalized under police supervision.

Three in Custody, Motive Under Investigation

In addition to the alleged gunman, two other individuals were detained in connection with the incident. Police are actively investigating the motive behind the shooting, including whether there was a prior relationship between the suspect and the victim, and if the attack was politically motivated.

Salt Lake City Police Department emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing footage, witness statements, and evidence from the scene.

Protest Draws 10,000 Marchers Amid National Tensions

Approximately 10,000 protesters participated in the march, which spanned from Pioneer Park to the Federal Building. The “No Kings” movement has gained traction in cities across the U.S., with demonstrators calling out what they see as authoritarian behavior and an erosion of democratic norms during Trump’s presidency.

The protest coincided with a controversial military parade in Washington, D.C., celebrating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and Trump’s 79th birthday. The timing of both events heightened tensions nationwide.

Salt Lake City officials praised law enforcement for their quick response and emphasized their commitment to protecting free speech and public safety. No further information has been released on the condition of the victims or the identities of those arrested.
