Alyssa Wilson was 17, excited about her future and on her way to see Halloween lights at the St. Louis Zoo. She never made it to the event.
The Missouri teenager was killed in a shooting on Interstate 170 in Overland on October 14, according to information reported by NBC News. Prosecutors have charged Willie Herndon, 42, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with her death. His wife, Taiya Herndon, faces a charge of hindering prosecution.
The couple, both from Arlington, Texas, are accused of being involved in the case despite having no known connection to Wilson, investigators said.
The shooting happened at approximately 7 p.m. as Wilson drove south on I-170 toward Boo at the Zoo, the St. Louis Zoo’s Halloween event.
Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the regional Major Case Squad, described surveillance footage showing Wilson’s vehicle passing a white Buick Enclave stopped on the highway shoulder. According to investigators, a person exited the Buick, stood briefly, fired a single shot toward Wilson’s vehicle, returned to the Buick and drove away after switching off its hazard lights.
The bullet entered the rear of Wilson’s red Buick Encore. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators used surveillance footage and automated license plate reader data to trace the vehicle. Authorities subsequently located the couple at a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, approximately 12 miles from St. Louis, and arrested them on Friday, according to the supplied report.
A court-approved search reportedly recovered a firearm and additional evidence. Investigators also recovered a shell casing from the roadside, which was undergoing analysis.
Authorities said Herndon discussed his involvement during an interview and provided information relevant to other active investigations. Abell declined to discuss a possible motive while those investigations continued.
Wilson’s father, Robert Hickman, spoke at a news conference on Monday, remembering his daughter as a teenager looking forward to what lay ahead.
“Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future,” Hickman said, becoming emotional as he described the loss.
His daughter was just 60 days away from turning 18. The family had also been planning their first vacation together, a trip to Disney where Wilson hoped to meet Princess Tiana.
“Unfortunately, she’s not going to get to do that anymore,” Hickman said. “This was a senseless act.”
The loss has left the family without the future they had been planning with her, including milestones that were only weeks away.
Bail was set at $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for Taiya Herndon, according to the supplied report. Both were being held pending extradition.
FBI representative Dave Herr credited coordination among investigators and law enforcement agencies with helping resolve key aspects of the case within 36 hours.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not publicly established a motive. The charges against both defendants remain allegations, and neither should be treated as having been convicted.
For Wilson’s family, however, the immediate reality is devastating: a teenager heading to a Halloween outing will not celebrate her 18th birthday or take the Disney trip they had planned together.
