Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known to the world as Bobi Wine, has been formally nominated as a presidential candidate in the 2026 elections. His nomination cements a rematch against President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986.
From Pop Star to Political Challenger

“Tomorrow, we proudly raise our national flag as a symbol of patriotism as @HEBobiwine is nominated our presidential candidate,” NUP said in a celebratory statement Tuesday night. The announcement came with news of a rally in Nateete, branded under the slogan “A New Uganda Now.”
Museveni, 81, Not Backing Down
On the other side of the ballot is Yoweri Museveni, now 81, who was nominated earlier this week as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate.
Museveni has built his campaign on stability and economic growth, pointing to Uganda’s progress toward middle-income status as proof of his leadership.
But critics argue that his 40-year rule has stifled democracy, weakened institutions, and blocked younger generations from shaping Uganda’s future.
