Cardi B is weighing in on the controversial Lindsay Clancy case, arguing that postpartum mental illness should not become an excuse for the deaths of three children.
During an X Spaces discussion on Thursday, Aug. 27, the rapper criticized what she described as attempts to find explanations or loopholes for Clancy as she faces prosecution in connection with the deaths of her children.
“One thing about me, when it comes to kids, is stop looking for different loopholes,” Cardi said.
She specifically pushed back on suggestions that Clancy’s husband or the broader system should bear responsibility for what happened.
“A lot of y’all are talking about her husband probably did it, or the system failed her,” Cardi said. “We need to stop looking for an excuse.”
Clancy, 36, is charged in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Prosecutors allege Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands before jumping from a second-story window. She survived the fall but suffered paralysis from the waist down.
Her defense has argued that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time and therefore lacked criminal responsibility for the killings. Prosecutors, however, contend the deaths were deliberate and that she understood her actions.
That mental-health defense became a major focus of Cardi’s criticism.
“If your mental health is so fucked up that you kill three fucking kids, maybe you shouldn’t be on the streets,” she said.
Cardi also acknowledged that postpartum depression affects many women, particularly those who lack adequate support, but questioned whether that should lessen responsibility for someone accused of killing their children.
“A lot of women in our hood are suffering from postpartum depression,” Cardi said. “There are women in our hoods whom nobody offered to help with their children. Does that give them an excuse to kill their kids?”
The rapper also questioned why a reported fundraiser connected to Clancy had raised roughly $1 million.
“The bitches raised a million fucking dollars,” Cardi said. “Why are we giving somebody that is on trial for murdering her kids a million dollars? Go give that shit to a charity.”
Clancy’s case has drawn intense public attention to postpartum psychosis, maternal mental health and the question of criminal responsibility when severe mental illness is raised as a defense.
Cardi’s comments add a high-profile celebrity voice to that debate, but the legal question remains with the court as prosecutors and Clancy’s defense present their competing arguments over what happened and whether she should be held criminally responsible.
