Erica Banks wanted to make a few young Dallas fans’ day — but one of the items she bought quickly turned her back-to-school shopping trip into an online debate.

The Dallas rapper and Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star went viral after videos surfaced showing her shopping with children and teenagers at a Dallas department store on August 8.

Banks said the encounter started as an unexpected meet-and-greet before several young fans asked her to buy them something.

She agreed, picking up items that included ski masks before later visiting The Hair Depot to purchase hair bundles for several teenage girls.

The gesture was clearly personal for Banks, but social media users had plenty to say about one particular purchase.

Erica Banks found herself at the center of an unexpected online conversation after documenting an impromptu shopping trip with young fans in Dallas.

Videos posted to Instagram on August 8 show Banks inside a Dallas department store surrounded by children and teenagers.

Her hit song “Buss It” could be heard playing through the store as several young fans gathered around her.

Banks described the encounter as an unplanned meet-and-greet.

“Y’all, so I’m walking around the store. Doing my little meet-and-greet,” Banks said in one of the clips.

According to the rapper, three young fans approached her with a request.

“Three musketeers pulled up on me and said, ‘Uhhh can you buy me something?’” she recalled.

Banks then asked the children what they wanted before showing viewers some of the items she had purchased.

Among those items were ski masks.

“And guess what I’m doing? Show them the ski masks, ayyyyyyeeee!” Banks said.

That purchase immediately became the subject of discussion online.

Some commenters questioned why ski masks were being purchased for children during back-to-school shopping, particularly given the way such masks can be perceived in public.

One commenter criticized the choice, writing that people can face consequences for wearing ski masks in public and questioning the decision to purchase them for school.

Another commenter suggested that Banks should have focused on more traditional school supplies, such as backpacks.

A third commenter took an even sharper approach, questioning what kind of school would require ski masks and referencing criminal activity.

Another commenter jokingly warned Banks that the children could use the masks to rob her.

The criticism focused specifically on the ski masks, rather than Banks’ decision to spend money on the young fans.

The shopping trip continued after the department store visit.

Banks later went to The Hair Depot, where she bought hair bundles for several teenage girls.

In another video, Banks showed one of the girls after receiving the bundles.

“Y’all she just got her some bundles,” Banks said.

She recalled the girl asking, “Can you get me these?”

Banks laughed before responding, “You want me to buy you some bundles, girl?”

She then asked the girls to greet the camera.

The unexpected shopping trip was apparently expensive enough for Banks to joke about the damage to her wallet.

“Y’all, they just broke my pockets — real bad,” she said.

Banks is a Dallas rapper best known for her breakout hit “Buss It” and her appearances on Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Her latest viral moment was less about a planned performance or promotional appearance and more about an interaction with young people from her hometown.

The videos show Banks responding to requests from fans while moving through local stores.

Her decision to buy hair bundles for several teenage girls also became part of the story, with Banks presenting the purchases as an extension of her willingness to give back to people from Dallas.

She later addressed the shopping trip through her Instagram captions.

“Asking me to buy bundles was so bold bruh. LMAO, she ain’t wrong tho. I love my city, anything for them,” Banks wrote.

She followed that with another message: “Brought everybody what they wanted today.”

Those comments provide Banks’ own explanation for why she agreed to the requests in the first place.

The viral moment highlights how quickly an ordinary celebrity-fan interaction can become a larger social media conversation.

Banks appeared to view the outing as a chance to support young people from her hometown and give them something they wanted.

But the ski masks introduced a separate conversation about how certain items are perceived when associated with children, particularly during back-to-school season.

The reaction also demonstrates the different ways audiences can interpret the same gesture.

For Banks, the emphasis was on showing love to her city.

For some commenters, the specific items she purchased raised questions about whether they were appropriate for school-aged children.

The clearest personal element of the story is Banks’ connection to Dallas.

Rather than simply posing for photos with fans, she spent money on requests from young people who approached her while she was shopping.

Her later caption made that intention explicit, saying she loves her city and had bought everybody what they wanted.

The online debate may have shifted attention toward the ski masks, but the videos also show a celebrity choosing to engage directly with young fans from her hometown

Erica Banks’ back-to-school shopping trip turned into an unexpected viral moment after the ski masks she bought for young fans sparked debate online.

Banks, meanwhile, made her position clear: she was simply showing love to her city and giving the kids what they asked for.
