Hirata Runa, an 8-year-old trainee with Japanese girls’ idol group DIANNA Project, has died after an influenza-related medical complication.
Runa “passed away peacefully” on September 25, according to a statement shared through her X account.

DIANNA Project said the young performer died “due to myocarditis resulting from influenza.” The group also asked fans and the public to respect the family’s privacy during the grieving process.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the fans who supported Runa Hirata and to everyone involved who provided their support,” the group said in its statement.

Runa had continued performing shortly before her death. According to reports, her final performance took place on September 20, just five days before she died.
Following that appearance, Runa shared a message with her supporters, writing: “Thank you for today too, I appreciate it. It was so much fun.”

Eight days later, a message posted through her account thanked the fellow idols, fans, agency staff and others who had supported her during her life.
The DIANNA Project statement identified myocarditis resulting from influenza as the cause of death.
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, according to the American Heart Association.

Runa’s death at just 8 years old has prompted an outpouring of grief from those who followed her young career and supported her work with the DIANNA Project.
The group did not provide further details about her illness and asked that attention remain focused on respecting her family and remembering the young performer.
Runa’s final public message — that she had enjoyed her last performance — now stands as one of the final words she shared with her fans.
