January 16th marked what would have been the 46th birthday of Aaliyah, the “Princess of R&B.” Nearly two decades after her untimely passing, her legacy continues to shine brightly in the hearts of her fans, family, and the music industry. Known for her timeless hits, unparalleled style, and angelic voice, Aaliyah remains an enduring icon.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, shared heartfelt reflections on his sister’s legacy and the special bond they still share.

    A Brother’s Tribute

“I do often talk to her in times of trouble, or when I’m really missing her,” Haughton revealed. “I talk to her in my heart, in my mind, in my dreams.”

Reflecting on her unparalleled talent and charisma, Haughton expressed what he would say if he could speak to her today: “I love you, and I’m so proud of you, and let’s enjoy this together. I know you’re smiling. Let’s share this doll, listen to ‘One in a Million,’ and take in the fans’ reactions. I love you so much.”

Aaliyah Barbie: A Celebration of Her Legacy

This year, Haughton partnered with Barbie to celebrate his sister’s lasting impact with a doll inspired by her classic “One in a Million” music video. The Aaliyah Barbie, dressed in a sleek black leather outfit reminiscent of her iconic style, sold out on January 16th, the day of her birthday.

“Today on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the Princess of R&B’s unmatched legacy as a once-in-a-generation talent,” read a statement on Barbie’s official Instagram. “A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll remembers her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations.”

Haughton shared his excitement for the collaboration, imagining how much joy it would have brought his sister. “I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place,” he said. “And she’s going to have a doll with her, doing all the dance moves from ‘One in a Million.’”

    Remembering Aaliyah’s Angelic Voice

For Haughton, Aaliyah’s music is a way to keep her spirit alive. “Her voice is so angelic. One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, still to this day,” he said. “Her presence comes through in her music and these collaborations we do.”

He commemorates her birthday and other significant dates by listening to her songs, which continue to resonate with fans worldwide.

    A Loving and Caring Spirit

Beyond her immense talent, Haughton remembered Aaliyah’s compassionate nature and her deep care for those around her. “My sister, although she worked so hard, she always was loving and caring to the people around her,” he explained. “Her makeup artists, the managers—she cared for everyone.”

    A Lasting Influence

Aaliyah’s influence extends far beyond her music. From her fashion-forward style to her groundbreaking contributions to R&B, she left an indelible mark on pop culture. Her timeless tracks, like “Rock the Boat,” “Are You That Somebody?” and “Try Again,” continue to inspire new generations of artists and fans alike.

As the world celebrates her 46th birthday, Aaliyah’s legacy remains alive through her music, her fans, and the love of her family. The release of the Aaliyah Barbie serves as another testament to her enduring influence and the deep affection her fans still hold for her.

“She was destined to be the biggest star in the world,” Haughton said. “And even though she’s not here physically, her light continues to shine through everything she’s left behind.”
