Ice-T is clearing up the history behind his longtime friendship with Jay-Z — including how the two rappers first crossed paths and why there was never any beef over “99 Problems.”
The hip-hop legend shared a photo with Jay-Z from the Grammys on Sunday, Sept. 27, using the moment to look back at their connection dating back to before Jay-Z became a global superstar.
“I met Jay Z way back,” Ice-T wrote. “When ‘Big Daddy Kane’ brought him by my house in LA. We’ve always been cool.”
That early introduction came through Big Daddy Kane, who played an important role in Jay-Z’s early career. Jay-Z toured with Kane before eventually establishing himself as one of hip-hop’s biggest names.
But Ice-T also used his post to address a piece of rap history that has periodically raised questions: Jay-Z’s “99 Problems.”
Jay-Z’s version appeared on his 2003 album The Black Album and reworked the concept from Ice-T’s 1993 song of the same name.
“And YES, he remade ‘99 Problems,’ but there was never any Beef or bad Business,” Ice-T wrote.
The distinction matters because the two versions of “99 Problems” took the concept in very different directions.
Ice-T’s original appeared on Home Invasion and featured Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew, with the song centered on sexual relationships. Jay-Z and producer Rick Rubin later transformed the concept for The Black Album, focusing on police harassment, racial profiling and the pressures surrounding Jay-Z’s life.
Jay-Z’s version became one of his signature records, while the connection to Ice-T occasionally led to speculation about whether the remake created tension between the two rappers.
Ice-T has addressed that idea before. He previously recalled an encounter with Jay-Z at the 2023 Grammys after Jay-Z had apparently seen online claims that Ice-T was upset about the remake.
According to Ice-T, there was no beef.
He has acknowledged that Jay-Z could have given him a shout-out, but his latest message again makes clear that he did not view the song as a personal conflict.
Fans responding to Ice-T’s latest post celebrated the connection between the two rappers, with some highlighting the history linking Ice-T, Jay-Z and Big Daddy Kane.
More than three decades after Ice-T released his original “99 Problems,” the record has become part of a much bigger hip-hop lineage — one that, according to Ice-T, includes influence, respect and no bad blood between the artists.
