Lil Durk Secures Trial Separation Win as Judge Splits Racketeering Charges
Lil Durk scored a significant procedural victory Tuesday after a federal judge ruled that newly added racketeering allegations will be handled separately from his upcoming murder-for-hire trial.
U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald ordered the racketeering counts to be severed from the Los Angeles case, allowing the previously scheduled August 20 trial on the original charges to move forward without those additional allegations included.
The decision narrows the scope of the upcoming proceedings but does not eliminate the racketeering charges. Prosecutors will have the opportunity to pursue those allegations in a separate trial at a later date.
The ruling marks a major development in a case that has attracted widespread attention across the hip-hop community.

Judge Separates Racketeering Allegations From August Trial
The federal case against Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, centers on allegations that prosecutors say involve a murder-for-hire plot targeting rapper Quando Rondo.
Authorities allege that the case involved an attempted attack connected to Rondo that resulted in the death of his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson.
Durk has faced federal charges related to the investigation, and prosecutors later introduced additional racketeering allegations in June.
Defense attorneys argued that adding the new counts shortly before trial created challenges for preparing an effective defense.
They requested that the new allegations either be dismissed or separated into another proceeding.
Judge Fitzgerald ultimately granted the alternative request, ordering that the racketeering allegations receive their own trial.
The August 20 trial will now focus on the remaining federal charges currently scheduled before the court.
Defense Team Argued Prosecutors Added Charges Too Late
During the hearing, Durk’s attorneys argued that prosecutors changed the scope of the case by introducing broader racketeering allegations close to trial.
The defense maintained that the timing made it difficult to prepare for the expanded accusations while also defending against the original charges.
Rolling Stone reporter Nancy Dillon followed the hearing and shared updates from the courtroom.
Before the decision, Dillon reported that Durk was seeking to separate allegations involving other incidents from the Los Angeles murder-for-hire case.
She also reported that Judge Fitzgerald appeared frustrated with aspects of the prosecution’s arguments during the hearing.
After the ruling, Dillon reported that the judge wrote, “The Government chose to withdraw evidence of the ‘Chicago incident’ in the Los Angeles trial.”
The court’s decision means prosecutors will not be able to combine those racketeering allegations with the August proceedings.

Lil Durk’s Attorneys React to Court Decision
Durk’s legal team, including attorneys Drew Findling and Brian Steel, had argued that separating the allegations was necessary to ensure a fair trial.
The defense maintained that the addition of new accusations created an unfair burden ahead of the scheduled court date.
By granting the severance request, the judge allowed the original trial timeline to remain intact.
A separate trial date for the racketeering charges has not been announced.
Durk and his co-defendants remain scheduled to appear in court beginning August 20 for the remaining federal charges.
Why the Ruling Matters
The decision is important because criminal trials often depend heavily on how charges and evidence are presented to a jury.
Combining multiple allegations into one proceeding can create complicated legal questions, especially when prosecutors introduce additional accusations involving separate events.
The judge’s ruling means the August trial will focus on a narrower set of allegations rather than the broader racketeering claims.
For Durk’s defense team, the separation provides more defined boundaries for the upcoming proceedings.
For prosecutors, the ruling does not end their ability to pursue the racketeering allegations — it only changes when and how those claims will be presented.
Lil Durk Case Heads Toward August Trial
With the racketeering allegations separated, attention now turns toward the August 20 federal trial.
The case remains one of the most closely watched legal battles involving a major hip-hop artist, with both sides preparing for a high-profile courtroom fight.
The latest ruling gives Lil Durk’s defense team a narrower trial landscape, but the broader legal battle is far from over.
As proceedings move forward, the next major chapter will unfold when the remaining charges reach trial later this summer.
