Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has shed light on his previously undisclosed marriage and the challenges that led to its eventual collapse. During a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the “Soundtrack” crooner spoke candidly about his life in Sweden, his role as a “house husband,” and the circumstances surrounding his divorce.

A Secret Marriage to a Swedish Woman

May D revealed that his decision to relocate to Sweden stemmed from a romantic relationship with a Swedish woman who later became his wife. What began as a professional trip for a music show turned into a life-changing move. “I went to Sweden for a show but decided to settle down there since my girlfriend was Swedish,” he shared.

The marriage, however, remained largely private, with May D choosing not to publicize the relationship extensively.

    Life as a “House Husband”

Adjusting to life in Sweden, May D took on the role of a stay-at-home father, focusing on raising their child while his wife pursued a career. The singer defended his unconventional lifestyle, highlighting the financial balance he maintained despite not engaging in traditional employment.

“I was a house husband. What do you want me to do? I should go and work?” he said. “My wife was working, but when I go for shows, I make five times what she earns in a month. I was a house husband, but I was comfortable. I had my baby, my wife can’t be the one taking care of the baby and working at the same time.”

May D’s remarks underscore the dynamic nature of modern relationships, where traditional gender roles are increasingly being redefined. Despite his nontraditional role, he maintained financial stability, earning significantly through his music career.

    Divorce Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

The marriage eventually hit a breaking point during the COVID-19 lockdown. May D explained that travel restrictions and his inability to return to Sweden from Nigeria during the pandemic led to the end of their relationship.

“We got divorced during COVID-19 because I got stuck in Nigeria. That was how she divorced me,” he recounted. “You know they think different from us.”

The singer’s remarks hint at cultural differences that may have contributed to the dissolution of their marriage. May D’s candid admission provides a rare glimpse into the personal struggles he faced during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.

    Reflections on Love and Loss

May D’s story is a reminder of the complexities that come with balancing personal relationships and professional commitments, particularly in cross-cultural marriages. His experience highlights how external factors like the pandemic can strain even the strongest bonds, leading to unexpected outcomes.

    Moving Forward

As he continues to focus on his music career, May D’s reflections on his marriage and divorce provide valuable insights into the challenges of navigating love and family life in a globalized world. While the chapter with his Swedish ex-wife has closed, May D’s openness about his experiences will undoubtedly resonate with fans and spark conversations about relationships, cultural dynamics, and resilience.

May D’s journey is a testament to the ups and downs of life and love, offering lessons on adaptability, sacrifice, and the importance of communication in relationships.
