Mugisha Muntu Cleared for 2026 Presidential Nomination

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) confirmed that their presidential flagbearer will be formally nominated today, September 24, 2025, by the Electoral Commission (EC) at 1:00 p.m.

    ANT Confirms Muntu’s Nomination

In a statement shared by the party, ANT announced that Muntu successfully met all legal requirements, including submitting verified lists of supporters from at least 98 districts across Uganda, as mandated by the Presidential Elections Act.

The EC released a verification report on September 23, officially clearing him for nomination.

“We are pleased to announce that our Presidential Candidate, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has officially been cleared for nomination. We thank all our supporters for their unwavering and steadfast commitment,” ANT stated.

From Army Commander to Opposition Leader

Mugisha Muntu’s journey is a story of discipline, reform, and leadership.

    • He is a former army commander, bringing decades of national security experience to the political arena.
    • Muntu also served as president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) before breaking away in 2018 to form ANT.
    • With ANT, he positioned the party as an alternative opposition force, emphasizing discipline, integrity, and institutional reform.

His experience and reputation as a principled leader make him a serious contender in a political landscape long dominated by President Yoweri Museveni.

    Campaign Priorities

    Muntu’s anticipated campaign focuses on:

    • Governance reforms to reduce corruption and strengthen transparency
    • Institutional reform to create accountability in state structures
    • Equal opportunities for all Ugandans, especially the youth and marginalized communities

Supporters say his platform of principled leadership resonates with voters frustrated by decades of entrenched political control.

    Opposition Dynamics Ahead of 2026

Today’s nomination sets Muntu up in direct contest with President Museveni, nominated on Tuesday, and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine, whose nomination is scheduled later today.

His entry into the race adds significant weight to the opposition field, but analysts warn about the risk of splitting votes among anti-Museveni candidates, potentially benefiting the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Whether the opposition can unite behind a single candidate or will run fragmented campaigns remains a key question as Uganda heads toward general elections.

    What’s Next

The Electoral Commission will officially close presidential nominations later today, after which the final list of candidates for the 2026 general elections will be confirmed.

With Muntu now officially in the race, the stage is set for a high-stakes showdown that could reshape Uganda’s political future.
