Rebel Wilson Wins Defamation Case as Australian Judge Dismisses Actress’ Lawsuit

Rebel Wilson has secured a significant courtroom victory after an Australian judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought against her by actress Charlotte MacInnes, marking the latest development in the ongoing legal disputes surrounding Wilson’s directorial debut, The Deb.

In a ruling delivered Wednesday by the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney, Justice Elizabeth Raper rejected both MacInnes’ defamation and breach-of-contract claims against the Pitch Perfect star. The court also ordered MacInnes to cover Wilson’s legal costs, adding another major chapter to the legal fallout tied to the film’s production.

The decision does not resolve the separate lawsuits involving producer Amanda Ghost and other producers connected to The Deb, but it represents an important win for Wilson in one of several ongoing legal battles.

The Court Rejected Charlotte MacInnes’ Claims

The lawsuit centered on a series of Instagram posts Wilson shared between September 2024 and July 2025.

MacInnes alleged those posts falsely accused her of changing her account of an incident involving producer Amanda Ghost in order to advance her career. According to the lawsuit, the posts damaged her reputation and amounted to defamation.

Wilson’s statements stemmed from allegations surrounding the production of The Deb, her feature directorial debut.

According to Wilson, MacInnes had previously described an encounter with Ghost at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on September 23. Wilson alleged MacInnes told her that after swimming together, Ghost suggested they warm up by getting into a bathtub while still wearing their swimsuits.

Wilson said MacInnes later told her the encounter made her uncomfortable.

MacInnes disputed Wilson’s version of events, denying that she had described the incident in the way Wilson later portrayed publicly. That disagreement became one of the central issues in the legal dispute.

After reviewing the case, Justice Raper concluded that Wilson’s Instagram posts were not defamatory.

The judge found that suggesting someone had changed their story would not necessarily cause an ordinary or reasonable person to think less of that individual. The ruling also stated that MacInnes failed to demonstrate that the posts had harmed her reputation.

Justice Raper further found that Wilson had established that the substance of her statements was substantially true.

However, the court did not determine whether the alleged shared bath incident constituted sexualized conduct, leaving that issue unresolved.

How The Deb Became the Center of Multiple Legal Disputes

The Deb was expected to mark a major milestone in Wilson’s career as her first feature film as a director.

Instead, the project has become entangled in multiple legal disputes involving members of its production team.

MacInnes appeared in the film, while Amanda Ghost served as one of its producers. Allegations surrounding the production later spilled into public view as Wilson raised concerns about events she said had occurred behind the scenes.

The current ruling addresses only MacInnes’ lawsuit against Wilson. Separate legal actions involving Ghost and fellow producers Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden remain ongoing and were not decided as part of Wednesday’s judgment.

Because those cases are still active, broader legal questions surrounding the production have yet to be resolved.

    Why the Ruling Matters

The decision is notable because it addresses the legal standard for defamation in Australia, particularly regarding statements made on social media.

Justice Raper’s ruling focused not on whether every disputed allegation was true, but on whether Wilson’s posts would reasonably lower MacInnes’s reputation in the eyes of an ordinary person. The court ultimately concluded they would not.

The ruling also reinforces that defamation claims require evidence of reputational harm, something the judge found MacInnes had not established in this case.

For Wilson, the dismissal represents a significant legal victory as she continues defending herself in other litigation connected to The Deb.

    Human Angle

Following the ruling, Wilson reflected on the lengthy legal process in a detailed Instagram statement.

She wrote that she had invested “years of passion” into The Deb and described watching the project’s journey become disrupted as “incredibly difficult.”

Wilson added that the experience had challenged her but also strengthened her belief in standing up for what she believes is right while continuing to create work that brings audiences joy.

Her comments offered a personal perspective on a dispute that has increasingly shifted from a film production into a series of closely watched legal proceedings.

As other lawsuits connected to The Deb continue through the courts, Wednesday’s ruling closes one chapter—but the broader legal saga surrounding the film is far from over.
