The Recording Academy has announced a major change regarding Grammy eligibility for J-Kwon and the original creators of the 2004 hip-hop classic “Tipsy,” which was interpolated in Shaboozey’s breakout country hit, “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”
Initially nominated for Song of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards, the track credited J-Kwon, along with “Tipsy” co-writers Joe Kent and Mark Williams. However, under the Academy’s rules for sampled or interpolated material, J-Kwon and the other original writers are no longer recognized as songwriters for Shaboozey’s version. Instead, they are only eligible to receive a certificate if the song wins during the February 1 ceremony.
Despite this ruling, the legacy of “Tipsy,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004, continues to resonate, especially through the success of Shaboozey’s hit.
