Veteran actress and comedian Ruth Buzzi, best known for her unforgettable role on NBC’s “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” has passed away at the age of 88. Buzzi died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday at her home in Texas, where she had been under hospice care, according to a post shared early Friday on her official Facebook page.

Her husband, Kent Perkins, confirmed the heartbreaking news and shared touching messages in the final hours leading up to her passing — including one from Ruth herself that expressed deep gratitude to her fans.

A Quiet Goodbye From a Comedic Legend

Ruth had been privately battling Alzheimer’s disease since her diagnosis in 2012, and in 2022, she was left physically disabled after suffering a debilitating stroke. Despite her declining health, she remained in close contact with fans through social media, often sharing memories and appreciation for their continued support.

Just a day before the official announcement of her death, Kent posted a heartfelt update to her Facebook page, revealing that Ruth would no longer be posting due to her health but wanted fans to know how much they meant to her.

“She wants you to know she probably had more fun doing those shows than you had watching them,” he wrote.

He encouraged followers to post old photos, cherished memories, and tributes to keep Ruth’s legacy alive — and fans responded with an outpouring of love.

Decades of Joy: Ruth Buzzi’s Illustrious Career

Born in 1936, Ruth Buzzi’s passion for performing sparked early. She landed her first professional entertainment gig at just 19 years old, which kickstarted a career that would span more than six decades.

She made her name in theatre, television, film, and voice acting, eventually becoming a staple of American comedy.

Her rise to fame was cemented in the late 1960s through her work on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” one of the most iconic sketch comedy shows of its time. Among the cast of stars, Ruth stood out with her physical comedy, expressive face, and memorable characters. Her most famous role was Gladys Ormphby, the cranky spinster in a hairnet who wielded her purse as a weapon — often while sitting on a park bench and exchanging hilarious barbs with guest stars.

Beyond ‘Laugh-In’: Ruth’s Enduring Impact

Ruth Buzzi’s comedic chops were not limited to the Laugh-In stage. Over the years, she appeared in a wide variety of television programs, including “The Carol Burnett Show,” “Days of Our Lives,” “That’s Incredible,” and “Donny & Marie.”

Her voice acting credits are equally impressive, contributing to beloved animated series such as “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “The Berenstain Bears,” and “The Pink Panther.”

In 1976, she appeared in Disney’s “Freaky Friday” alongside Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, further demonstrating her range beyond sketch comedy.

Despite stepping away from the spotlight in recent years, Buzzi came out of retirement for a special project in 2021. She starred in the psychological drama “One Month Out,” directed by actor and filmmaker John Schneider, with her husband Kent Perkins also playing a role. It would be her final on-screen appearance.

A Legacy of Laughter and Love

Ruth Buzzi’s contribution to comedy and American television is immeasurable. Her slapstick style, quirky characters, and masterful timing made her a fan favorite — and a trailblazer for female comedians in the variety show space.

Off-screen, she was known for her kindness, warmth, and strong connection with fans, often using social media to engage directly with her audience. Even in the face of illness, Ruth’s humor and spirit never wavered.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Kent Perkins, who remained her devoted caregiver and public advocate as her health declined.

Tributes Pour In

Following the announcement of her death, fans, friends, and fellow performers began paying tribute to the iconic performer online. Many recalled childhood memories of watching her on “Laugh-In” and the joy she brought into their homes.

“She was a comedic genius, and a kind soul,” one fan wrote on Facebook. “Ruth Buzzi made me laugh more than anyone growing up.”

Others expressed gratitude that she shared so many decades with her fans and continued to give her love even in her final days.

Ruth Buzzi was 88.
May she rest in peace, and may her laughter echo forever.
