Selena Gomez is fighting back against investors who accused her of fraud, asking a judge to throw out the lawsuit and calling the claims against her “meritless” and “frivolous.”
Gomez filed a motion to dismiss Wednesday, arguing that the investors’ allegations fail to establish that she committed fraud or otherwise engaged in wrongdoing.
According to court documents, Gomez says the plaintiffs’ claims are “vague, generalized, and contradictory.” She also argues that the investors’ own allegations indicate she was not involved in, and would not have had knowledge of, the alleged false statements at issue.
Her attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, came out swinging in a statement accompanying the filing.
“Today’s motion to dismiss demonstrates the plaintiffs never should’ve dragged Selena Gomez into this case as the claims against her are completely meritless, if not frivolous,” Rosengart said.
He went further, saying the legal team is exploring additional options for Gomez, including possible sanctions against the plaintiffs for allegedly including her improperly in the case.
The legal battle stems from a lawsuit filed earlier this month involving Wondermind, the mental-health-focused company co-founded by Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey and former business partner Daniella Pierson.
The investors allege they put $1.2 million into Wondermind but were ultimately left without adequate information as the company struggled financially.
According to the lawsuit, Gomez was presented as Wondermind’s “head of marketing,” and investors expected her substantial social media following to help promote the business.
The plaintiffs further allege that Gomez distanced herself from the company after the funding was secured.
Gomez is now challenging those claims directly, arguing that the allegations do not establish the elements necessary to hold her liable for fraud.
The dismissal request does not resolve the underlying dispute. The investors’ allegations remain claims, while Gomez’s filing represents her response and legal position.
For now, the battle is moving to court, with Gomez asking for the claims against her to be dismissed before the case can proceed further.
