Whoopi Goldberg Misses The View After Mount Etna Eruption Delays Travel

Whoopi Goldberg had an excuse for missing The View that few people can top: an active volcano.

The Oscar-winning actress and longtime television host was unable to return to the United States after volcanic activity at Mount Etna disrupted travel in Sicily, forcing her to miss Monday’s episode of the ABC daytime talk show.

While her co-hosts joked about the unusual situation, Goldberg checked in remotely to explain how the eruption upended her travel plans—and managed to find some humor in the middle of the disruption.

Her update quickly turned an ordinary absence into one of the show’s most memorable moments of the day.

Monday’s episode of The View opened with Joy Behar explaining why several familiar faces were missing from the panel.

Behar joked that the show’s co-hosts were “dropping like flies” before running through the reasons behind each absence.

According to Behar, Ana Navarro was delayed in Miami because of weather, while Sara Haines was dealing with storm-related damage.

That left Goldberg, whose explanation stood out from the rest.

Behar jokingly referred to it as “the old volcano excuse” before the program cut to Goldberg, who checked in from Sicily.

Goldberg explained that Mount Etna had erupted, disrupting travel and making it difficult for her to return home.

She said the volcanic activity led to airport closures, leaving her waiting for an opportunity to fly back to the United States.

Despite the unexpected delay, Goldberg kept the mood light.

Comparing her situation with the travel problems facing her co-hosts, she joked that hers topped them all before delivering the punchline: “A volcano ate my homework.”

The humorous exchange quickly became one of the highlights of the broadcast.

Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and regularly experiences periods of volcanic activity.

When eruptions produce significant volcanic ash, flights operating through nearby airports—including those serving the Catania area—can be delayed or suspended because ash poses a serious hazard to aircraft.

Goldberg was in Sicily before the eruption disrupted transportation.

As one of The View‘s original moderators and longest-serving co-hosts, her absence was immediately noticeable, prompting the show to explain why she was missing from the panel.

Rather than expressing frustration, Goldberg approached the unexpected travel setback with the same humor that has become a trademark of her television appearances.

Volcanic eruptions can have effects that extend well beyond the immediate area, disrupting transportation and affecting thousands of travelers.

Goldberg’s situation offered a high-profile example of how natural events can unexpectedly alter travel plans.

Her lighthearted response also demonstrated how live television personalities often turn unexpected situations into memorable moments that resonate with audiences.

Instead of letting an interrupted vacation become a stressful story, Goldberg leaned into the absurdity of the situation.

Her “volcano ate my homework” joke transformed an inconvenient travel delay into a moment that had both her co-hosts and viewers laughing.

Sometimes the best travel stories are the ones nobody could have planned.

Whoopi Goldberg may be temporarily stuck in Sicily, but she hasn’t lost her sense of humor. Until Mount Etna settles and flights resume, The View viewers may have to wait a little longer for her return to the studio.
