Too $hort’s Brother Fatally Shot in East Oakland: Police Hunt for Suspects in Tragic Dispensary Robbery

Oakland, CA – The hip-hop community is mourning the tragic loss of Wayne Shaw, the older brother of legendary Bay Area rapper Too $hort. Shaw was fatally shot on Wednesday, January 28, in East Oakland during a violent attempted robbery outside an unlicensed marijuana dispensary.

    Fatal Confrontation During Dispensary Break-In

According to reports from the Oakland Police Department, the incident took place on a sidewalk near the dispensary when a group of men attempted to force their way inside by ramming a vehicle into the front doors. Shaw, who was at the scene, confronted the robbers, leading to a deadly altercation.

Police Lieutenant Gloria Beltra provided further details, stating, “The suspects arrived at the location and attempted to force their way into the property. While they were attempting their way in, the victim stepped out and was confronted by the suspects. The suspects fired several rounds at the victim.”

Shaw was critically wounded in the gunfire. Emergency responders quickly transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

    Investigation Expands Beyond the Shooting

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the homicide and are also looking into the operations of the marijuana dispensary. Reports indicate that the business was running without a license, which is a felony under California law. Law enforcement officials are now working to determine whether Shaw had any direct ties to the dispensary and if this may have played a role in the deadly altercation.

As the search for the suspects intensifies, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or those with relevant details can contact the Oakland Police Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the anonymous TIP LINE at (510) 238-7950. Additionally, individuals can submit videos or other evidence to cidvideos@oaklandca.gov.

Too $hort Remains Silent as Police Seek Justice

Thus far, Too $hort has not publicly commented on his brother’s tragic passing. The influential rapper, known for his decades-long career in hip-hop, has yet to address the loss or the ongoing investigation.

This heartbreaking incident occurred near an area of East Oakland that holds special significance for Too $hort. In 2022, the rapper was honored with a street named after him—”Too $hort Way”—a three-block stretch on Foothill Boulevard. At the time, the artist took to social media to express his excitement, sharing, “December 10th it’s official. Blow the mafuckin whistle Biiiiiiiitch!!!!!”

His contributions to the community were further recognized when December 10th was officially designated as “Too $hort Day” in Oakland. Mayor Libby Schaaf praised the rapper’s legacy, stating, “You have told the stories of Oakland’s streets, so it’s only right that Oakland gives you a street.”

    Ongoing Investigation and Community Response

As the community reels from this tragic event, many are calling for justice in the case. Oakland has long struggled with issues of gun violence, and Shaw’s killing adds to a growing concern over safety in the area.

Law enforcement remains committed to identifying and apprehending those responsible for Shaw’s death. While authorities continue to investigate, many in the hip-hop and Bay Area communities are expressing their condolences and support for Too $hort and his family during this difficult time.

The case remains open, and further developments are expected in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates as Oakland police work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.
