Twenty-six years ago, Brandy and Monica released the unforgettable classic The Boy Is Mine, a track produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Dallas Austin. The song became the best-selling single in the U.S. that year, moving 2.6 million copies and dominating the Billboard Hot 100 for an impressive 13 weeks.

    Reuniting After Nearly Three Decades

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Brandy and Monica shared their experience of reconnecting after almost 30 years, particularly in light of Ariana Grande’s reimagined version of The Boy Is Mine.

“It was nothing short of a blessing for Brandy and me not only to reconnect but to reconnect and do something as special as this innovative version of The Boy Is Mine,” Monica expressed. “She and I had not seen each other for many years, so it gave us the opportunity to talk not just about the song, but life as a whole.”

Brandy echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that their reunion was about “more than just music” and how it transported them back to “such a transformative and explosive time” in their careers.

Ariana Grande’s Unique Spin on the Classic

The remix, featured on Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album, was met with appreciation from both Brandy and Monica.

“I love the fact that she did not try to remake it in the form that Brandy and I originally created, but instead crafted something that’s her own while incorporating nostalgic elements from the record,” Monica explained. “That’s what made it such a no-brainer for me—it felt good.”

Brandy added, “Ariana is truly such a kind and talented soul. There is no one that does what she does with more grace and appreciation.”

Grammy Recognition & Longevity of the Song

Brandy and Monica were thrilled to learn that the song had earned a Grammy, further cementing its legacy.

“For this record to still be acknowledged in the way that it is and for a completely different generation to embrace a version of it is unbelievable,” Monica said. “I was extremely shocked, but filled with so much gratitude, happiness, and excitement.”

Reflecting on their Grammy win for Best R&B Performance, Brandy fondly recalled keeping the award on her piano.

“To create something that has stood the test of time, and to reignite that creation in a new way while still having it be honored and revered just as the original was, is such a blessing,” she said.

    A Potential Third Collaboration?

After their last duet, It All Belongs to Me in 2012, the question arose—could there be a third collaboration to complete the trilogy?

    “Absolutely,” Monica affirmed.

Brandy, excited about the possibility, added, “It’s like magic when Monica and I get together. Who knows what could be in store for us?”
