“Supergirl” has officially entered the box office race, earning $18 million domestically on its opening day as Warner Bros. and DC’s latest superhero release takes on strong competition from “Toy Story 5.”

The film, starring Milly Alcock as the iconic Kryptonian hero, opened in 3,602 theaters and landed in second place behind Disney and Pixar’s animated blockbuster.

While the debut gives “Supergirl” a solid start, the film faces pressure due to its reported $170 million production budget and the high expectations surrounding DC’s growing cinematic universe.

“Toy Story 5” remained the box office leader on Friday, bringing in $21 million domestically from 4,425 screens as it entered its second weekend in theaters.

The Disney and Pixar sequel is projected to earn between $70 million and $80 million over the weekend, pushing its domestic total closer to the $300 million mark.

The animated film previously delivered one of the biggest openings of 2026, debuting with $160 million domestically and earning $312 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, “Supergirl” arrived as the biggest new release of the weekend, earning $18 million on opening day.

The DC film follows a younger version of the superhero character as she teams up with an alien companion during a journey across the galaxy. The movie stars Milly Alcock alongside Eve Ridley, Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Diarmaid Murtagh, Ferdinand Kingsley, and David Corenswet.

Directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay from Ana Nogueira, “Supergirl” introduces a new chapter for the character within the DC film universe.

The opening performance places the movie behind the success of “Superman,” which debuted to $125 million domestically after costing approximately $225 million to produce.

“Supergirl” had a lower reported production cost at around $170 million, but the film will need continued audience support during its theatrical run to reach profitability.

“Supergirl” represents another major release connected to the rebuilding of DC’s movie franchise.

The character has long been associated with Superman mythology, but this film focuses on a different perspective by following Kara Zor-El as her own hero.

Milly Alcock became widely recognized after her role in House of the Dragon, where her performance gained international attention.

The movie is part of a larger effort from DC Studios to introduce fresh interpretations of familiar comic book characters while creating new stories for modern audiences.

The film also arrives during a competitive period for theatrical releases, with major franchises fighting for audience attention across animation, superhero, horror, and comedy categories.

The performance of “Supergirl” could provide insight into the current strength of superhero movies at the box office.

After years of massive comic book successes, studios have faced a changing entertainment landscape where audiences have become more selective about which franchise films they watch in theaters.

A strong theatrical run could help establish Milly Alcock’s version of Supergirl as a major part of DC’s future plans.

The movie’s results will likely be closely watched by fans, industry analysts, and Warner Bros. as the studio continues expanding its superhero lineup.

No specific fan reactions, social media trends, or audience responses were provided in the available information.

For Milly Alcock, “Supergirl” marks a major transition from acclaimed television work into leading a large-scale superhero franchise.

Taking on an established comic book character comes with significant expectations, especially for an actor stepping into a role that already has decades of fan history behind it.

The film’s opening weekend performance will help shape how audiences respond to this new version of Supergirl and what comes next for the character.

“Supergirl” has made its first box office move, but the battle for moviegoers is far from over as “Toy Story 5” continues its strong theatrical run.

Will DC’s newest hero gain enough momentum to become one of the year’s biggest superhero releases?
