Chris Brown is addressing the backlash Rep. Jasmine Crockett has faced since recognizing his musical career during his Texas concert.
The R&B superstar shared an Instagram Story Monday, Sept. 14, featuring a photo of himself embracing the Texas congresswoman onstage. The moment came two days after Crockett joined Brown and Usher during their concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Crockett recognized both artists for their contributions to music and said she wanted to document their impact in the Congressional Record. The ceremonial recognition was presented during the sold-out show, with Texas state Rep. Venton Jones and music producer RoccStar also participating.
The honor quickly generated criticism because of Brown’s history of legal issues, including his 2009 guilty plea to felony assault involving Rihanna.
Brown appeared to acknowledge the controversy in his message to Crockett, thanking her while apologizing for the criticism she may face because of the recognition.
“Thank you so much. I apologize for any backlash you have to deal with for awarding me. I’m not political but I move off of frequency and energy and I’m so grateful. ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU.”
His message did not directly address the criticism surrounding his past. Instead, Brown focused on his appreciation for Crockett and the recognition.
The controversy centers in part on the contrast between the celebration of Brown’s musical career and his documented legal history. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in 2009 in connection with an attack on Rihanna. He has also faced additional legal proceedings in subsequent years.
Crockett’s appearance was framed around the artists’ cultural contributions. During the presentation, she described the moment as a celebration of “Black joy” and praised Brown and Usher before the crowd.
The Congressional Record recognition itself is ceremonial; it does not represent a congressional vote or the passage of legislation.
Brown’s response now puts the focus back on the recognition — and on Crockett, who has faced public criticism over her decision to honor him.
For the singer, however, the message remained straightforward: gratitude for the honor and acknowledgment that Crockett has faced backlash because of it.
“ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU,” Brown wrote.
