Former NBA star J.R. Smith has been arrested in Texas on a family violence charge, according to local law enforcement records.
Smith, 39, was booked Tuesday into the Hunt County Detention Center on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence.
Jail records showed that no bond had been established for Smith as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have not publicly disclosed details about what allegedly happened or identified the other person involved.

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office has said the investigation remains active. Representatives for Smith have not publicly commented on the arrest or the allegation.
Smith spent 16 seasons in the NBA and won two championships during his career.
He was part of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that won the 2016 NBA championship before later winning another title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Smith retired from the NBA following the 2020 season and subsequently turned attention toward education.
He enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University and joined the school’s golf team. In May 2026, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies.
The current arrest is not Smith’s first encounter with the legal system.
In 2007, he was involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a passenger. Smith later pleaded guilty to reckless driving in connection with the crash and served 24 days in jail.
Under Texas law, assault causing bodily injury involving family violence is generally classified as a Class A misdemeanor, although the potential classification can change depending on factors including prior convictions and the circumstances alleged.
For now, Smith remains in custody as the current case proceeds.
