Stan Alieke, the lawyer representing embattled Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, has expressed frustration over his client’s continued detention despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 23, 2024.
Speed Darlington, who was rearrested on November 27 over allegations of cyberstalking fellow artist Burna Boy, remains in police custody, a situation that has sparked outrage among his supporters and legal team.
Lawyer Alleges Police Misconduct
Speaking publicly on Friday, Alieke accused the police of deliberately disobeying the court’s order to release Speed Darlington on bail.
“We have done everything a lawyer should do to get his client out. I have even exhausted all my connections. I have reached out to my political friends here in Abuja. The police have refused to obey the court order. There’s no justification for not obeying the court that granted Darlington bail,” Alieke said in a now-viral video shared on Instagram.
Allegations Against Burna Boy
In the same video, Alieke insinuated that Burna Boy may have influenced the police’s decision to keep Speed Darlington behind bars.
“The first time he was arrested in October, Burna came there with his team, and I was also there with Akpi and some of my staff. After the meeting, I saw Burna sharing bundles of cash with the police, and the police were asking for selfies. I told my staff, ‘See, if this guy makes a mistake again, these people will drill him.’”
Public Outcry
The singer’s prolonged detention has raised questions about police accountability and the enforcement of court orders. Supporters of Speed Darlington have taken to social media to demand his release, using hashtags and tagging relevant authorities to draw attention to the case.
A Legal and Public Battle
As the legal and public pressure mounts, Alieke vowed to continue fighting for his client’s release. Meanwhile, the situation has reignited discussions about alleged corruption within law enforcement and the potential influence of celebrity power in judicial matters.
For now, Speed Darlington remains in custody, with his legal team and fans awaiting further developments.
