As the press tour for Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest heats up, rapper-turned-actor A$AP Rocky recently stopped by the Track Star music show to discuss his new role. When asked about the research he did for the character, Rocky admitted he was already well-prepared thanks to a lifelong admiration for the legendary director.
“I grew up on Spike Lee. I didn’t have to do research,” Rocky said.
He then listed some of his all-time favorite Lee films, selecting from a four-decade catalog of iconic work:
“It’s between Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, Inside Man, [and] Crooklyn…”
Rocky also praised Lee’s 2012 film Red Hook Summer, noting how it taught him to experiment with different mediums. The film was shot on a small digital camera at a time when blockbuster production cameras dominated the industry.
Spike Lee Praises Rocky’s On-Screen Performance
The collaboration between Lee and Rocky has sparked mutual admiration. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lee lauded Rocky’s performance in Highest 2 Lowest:
“Yeah, don’t sleep on A$AP. In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe to toe.”
Lee pointed out an unexpected resemblance between Rocky and Denzel Washington, adding depth to their on-screen dynamic:
“Even before I got involved with this film, I always thought that A$AP looked like he could be Denzel’s son. There’s a big resemblance. So when you see it on the screen, it adds an element of father and son.”
No Intimidation, Just Chemistry
Lee noted that Rocky wasn’t overwhelmed by acting alongside one of the world’s greatest living actors—a feat that impressed the director:
“I’ve done five films with Denzel, and when he’s in a scene with somebody, they just get overwhelmed. But A$AP wasn’t having that. Toe to toe. I mean, they were going at it.”
This dynamic showcases Rocky’s commanding presence and natural talent, proving he’s more than capable of holding his own against Hollywood royalty.
