Akon’s futuristic city in Senegal has officially flatlined.
The “Locked Up” hitmaker’s grand vision for a $6 billion, Wakanda-inspired crypto-powered metropolis is no more, with the Senegalese government pulling the plug and reclaiming the land.
What was once hailed as a bold step into Africa’s high-tech future is now being labeled a pipe dream gone wrong—and fans can’t stop talking about how quickly the plan unraveled.
The Dream: A Wakanda on Senegal’s Coast
Unveiled in 2020 with the world watching, Akon City was meant to be a glittering utopia on the Atlantic coast of Senegal.
The concept was ambitious:

✅ Entirely powered by Akon’s own cryptocurrency, AKOIN
✅ A high-tech ecosystem promising flying cars and AKOIN-only ATMs
Phase one was supposed to finish in 2023, while phase two, stretching into 2029, planned universities, industrial zones, and global businesses operating in Akon’s crypto economy.
What Went Wrong?
Fast forward four years, and barely a shovel has touched the soil in Mbodiène, the quiet coastal town an hour from Dakar where Akon City was slated to rise.
In 2023, Senegal’s tourism and land agency Sapco-Senegal gave Akon a hard ultimatum:
“Start construction within two weeks—or lose the land.”
Akon missed the deadline. Now, most of the land has reverted to the government.
Sapco’s boss Serigne Mamadou Mboup told Bloomberg bluntly:
“The project no longer exists.”
Senegal’s New $1.2 Billion Plan
Instead of a crypto capital, Senegal has announced its own grounded development:

When Akon City was first announced, fans praised the singer for investing in Africa’s future. But with little to show years later, social media is divided:
