The family of Nolan Xavier Wells, the 18-year-old Mississippi teenager whose body was recovered near Horn Island after a two-day search over the Fourth of July weekend, has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Crump announced on July 7 that he is representing Wells’ family, pledging to pursue answers as investigators work to determine what happened during the teen’s final hours on the remote barrier island.
In a public statement, Crump expressed support for the grieving family while calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home,” Crump said.
He continued by emphasizing the family’s desire for answers.
“His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth. We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves.”
Crump’s involvement brings additional public attention to an investigation that remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and await key forensic results.
According to investigators, Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling with friends to Horn Island, an undeveloped barrier island located about 10 miles off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
The island, which is managed by the National Park Service, can only be reached by private boat.
His family reported him missing after he failed to return to the mainland.
A large-scale search effort soon followed, coordinated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the United States Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, National Park Service personnel, the United Cajun Navy, and community volunteers.
On July 6, a National Park Service ranger discovered a body in the waters near Horn Island.
Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said the body matched Wells’ description. However, authorities are continuing DNA testing before making a formal identification.
Investigators are also awaiting autopsy results, which are expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to interview witnesses and review available evidence.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said investigators believe Wells remained on Horn Island after other members of his group departed.
Authorities have also acknowledged the existence of a social media video showing an altercation on the island during the holiday weekend.
However, investigators have not confirmed whether that video is connected to Wells’ disappearance or death, and no conclusions have been announced regarding its relevance to the case.
That distinction remains important as officials continue collecting evidence.
