Cardi B is back to serve fans another rap banger with her upcoming single, “Imaginary Players,” dropping Friday, August 15th. The rapper gave fans an early peek into the track during an X Spaces chat, revealing that she got the green light from “the one and only”, widely believed to be JAY-Z.

She shared that several respected figures in the hip-hop world had already previewed the song and loved it, calling it “a staple” for her and emphasizing the importance of his approval before release.

“If he didn’t approve it, I probably wouldn’t even [feel] a certain type of way… maybe I just had to come a little bit harder,” Cardi explained. “But I’m glad that I came hard and he loved it.”

    A Nod to Hip-Hop History

The title, “Imaginary Players,” pays homage to JAY-Z’s 1997 track from In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, though Cardi has kept the exact connection under wraps. During a recent Instagram Live, she hinted at the challenges behind the track’s creation:

“If only y’all knew the story of what I had to go through with this single.”

She stressed that she fought to release the song despite being advised to take a different creative direction.

“I fought really hard to put this song out because some people wanted a different direction, but it’s like, I want my next single to be more of a Hip Hop direction.”

What Fans Can Expect From “AM I THE DRAMA?”

“Imaginary Players” follows Cardi B’s summer release, “Outside,” and will appear on her upcoming 23-track album, AM I THE DRAMA?. The album is stacked with fan favorites, including “WAP” and “Up” as bonus tracks.

With this new single, Cardi B is doubling down on her hip-hop roots, promising fans more raw, unapologetic energy and clever wordplay that has defined her career.

Get ready to stream “Imaginary Players” this Friday, August 15th — Cardi is bringing the heat, and the approval from JAY-Z only adds to the hype.

    Why This Release Matters

Cardi B’s insistence on staying true to hip-hop amid outside advice shows her dedication to her artistry. Fans have eagerly awaited her next big move, and this track promises to blend respect for rap history with Cardi’s signature style.

Her candid approach to her creative process, including seeking guidance from legends like JAY-Z, reinforces her position as one of the most influential voices in contemporary hip-hop.
