Ciara Shares How Owning Her Masters Turned “Level Up” Into Gold

During a recent interview with Forbes, the Grammy-winning singer opened up about her journey to becoming an independent artist and how navigating label drama ultimately led her to own her master recordings—a move that changed her career trajectory.

    The Meeting That Changed Everything

Ciara revealed that a pivotal meeting with a record executive changed the course of her career.

“It was also one of my greatest meetings because that propelled me to become independent, because literally he did not see the vision of what ‘Level Up’ was,” she said.

Ciara went on to highlight the support of her then-A&R, Monti Olson, who believed in her even when others did not:

“I’m forever grateful for him because he also believed in me when I was like eight months pregnant to sign a deal with me. He was one of the executives that were actually still at the company when the old CEO went out.”

    Reclaiming Her Masters

Despite the skepticism she faced, Ciara asked for her masters—and to her surprise, the label returned them for free.

“So let you know how much they didn’t believe, and now ‘Level Up’ is almost three times platinum,” she said.

Owning her masters not only gave Ciara creative control, but also significant financial benefits, proving how valuable it can be for artists to own their work outright.

“Level Up” and the Birth of an Independent Label

The success of “Level Up” helped Ciara launch her own label, Beauty Marks Entertainment, in 2017. The track became the first release from her label, showcasing her independence and entrepreneurial vision.

When it debuted on the charts, “Level Up” entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 77 on July 31, 2018, before moving up to number 59 the following week. It also hit number 10 on the US Digital Songs chart, marking Ciara’s sixth top-ten hit on the chart and her first since “Love Sex Magic” in 2009.

The single’s success cemented Ciara’s belief that ownership and creative freedom are key to long-term success in the music industry.

    Betting on Herself Paid Off

Ciara’s story is a prime example of how independent artistry can thrive when paired with vision, determination, and business savvy. By reclaiming her masters and launching Beauty Marks Entertainment, she created a platform to control her music, brand, and legacy.

“Betting on myself turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made,” Ciara said.

Her journey underscores a broader lesson for artists: taking ownership of your work can lead to both creative freedom and commercial success.

    Chart Success and Cultural Impact

Beyond chart performance, “Level Up” became a cultural moment, inspiring fans worldwide and sparking a viral dance challenge. The track’s upbeat message and catchy hook resonated with audiences, reinforcing Ciara’s relevance in today’s music landscape.

By releasing the song under her independent label, Ciara demonstrated that artists don’t need major label backing to achieve mainstream success—a lesson increasingly relevant in the age of streaming and social media.

    Ciara’s Vision for the Future

With Beauty Marks Entertainment, Ciara continues to empower herself and other artists, controlling not only the creative process but also the business side of her career. Her journey highlights the importance of negotiating ownership, advocating for yourself, and trusting your vision, even when others doubt it.

“Owning my masters allowed me to take full control of my artistry,” Ciara explained. “It’s about knowing your worth and protecting your legacy.”

Her success with “Level Up” and her label has inspired a new generation of artists to prioritize independence and ownership in an industry where these rights are often overlooked.

    Final Take

Ciara’s story is a blueprint for artists seeking creative freedom and commercial success. From reclaiming her masters to launching a thriving independent label, she’s shown that self-belief, persistence, and strategic moves can pay off in a major way.

For Ciara, “Level Up” isn’t just a song—it’s a testament to the power of ownership, vision, and resilience in the modern music industry.
