Elizabeth Smart’s Kidnapper Wanda Barzee Smiles in Disturbing Mugshot After Park Arrest—Violates Sex Offender Rules Again

Wanda Barzee, the woman convicted for her chilling role in the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart, is back behind bars—this time for violating Utah’s sex offender laws by allegedly visiting two restricted parks in Salt Lake City.

And in a photo that’s now going viral, Barzee appears disturbingly cheerful in her latest mugshot, grinning widely despite the serious charges.

    Barzee’s Bizarre Mugshot Raises Eyebrows

In an image obtained from the Utah Sex Offender Registry, Barzee is seen flashing a broad, toothy grin—exposing yellow-stained teeth, her signature unkempt white hair, and glaring, wide eyes. The unsettling smile has raised eyebrows online, with many questioning her mental state and why a convicted felon seems so gleeful in custody.

The registry also lists multiple details, including her height, weight, 11 known aliases, and the nature of her federal conviction tied to the high-profile Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case.

Arrested Again: Barzee Accused of Violating Court Restrictions

Police say Barzee, now 78, was spotted in not one, but two parks in Salt Lake City—areas explicitly off-limits to registered sex offenders. After the sighting, authorities acted swiftly, taking her into custody on Thursday and booking her into the Salt Lake County Jail.

According to Utah state law, registered sex offenders are barred from entering protected spaces, including public parks, schools, and certain community areas, especially where minors are likely to be present.

A Dark Past: Barzee’s Role in the Elizabeth Smart Case

Barzee is best known for her role in one of America’s most harrowing child abduction cases. In 2002, she and her husband, Brian David Mitchell, kidnapped 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom in the dead of night.

Smart later revealed that Barzee stood by and did nothing as Mitchell repeatedly raped and abused her during the nine-month ordeal. In 2010, Barzee pled guilty in federal court and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. She was released in December 2018, a move that outraged the public and the Smart family, given the trauma she helped inflict.

Mitchell, meanwhile, is serving a life sentence in federal prison in Arizona.

    Registry Restrictions and Recidivism Concerns

The recent arrest raises fresh questions about post-prison monitoring of high-risk offenders and whether enough is being done to prevent repeat violations by individuals like Barzee.

Her alleged decision to visit public parks—in violation of court-ordered restrictions—has reignited public concern about loopholes in the justice system and the effectiveness of sex offender registries in protecting communities.

    Elizabeth Smart Yet to Comment

As of now, Elizabeth Smart has not publicly commented on Barzee’s latest arrest. Smart, now an advocate for victims’ rights and child safety, has previously spoken out about her anger over Barzee’s release in 2018. She called the move a “serious injustice,” saying that Barzee remained a threat to society and had shown no signs of remorse.

    Public Reaction and Legal Fallout

Barzee’s eerie mugshot has already begun making rounds on social media, with many people reacting with disgust, disbelief, and renewed outrage. Legal experts now speculate she could face additional time behind bars for the alleged violations, depending on the outcome of the investigation and any possible parole violations.

Bottom Line: Wanda Barzee’s smiling mugshot is a disturbing reminder of her dark past. Her re-arrest has brought renewed attention to sex offender monitoring laws, the Elizabeth Smart case, and the enduring need for vigilant public safety measures.
