Fat Joe’s defamation lawsuit has entered another complicated phase after attorney Tyrone Blackburn asked a federal judge for permission to withdraw as legal counsel for Terrance Dixon.
Blackburn filed a motion on July 7 requesting to step away from representing Dixon, citing what he described as a “non-waivable conflict of interest that has arisen.”
The attorney also referenced concerns involving “the personal safety and well-being of undersigned counsel” as part of the reason behind his request.
The filing adds another layer to a legal dispute that has already involved multiple courtroom conflicts and allegations from both sides.
Blackburn’s request, however, does not remove him from the entire lawsuit.
While he is seeking to end his representation of Dixon, Blackburn and his law firm remain named defendants in the case brought by Fat Joe, whose legal name is Joseph Antonio Cartagena.
According to the filing, Blackburn and his firm intend to continue defending themselves as the litigation moves forward.
A Lawsuit Surrounded by Courtroom Disputes
Blackburn’s request comes after a series of developments that have increased attention on his role in the case.
In June, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis issued sanctions against Blackburn over comments made during a February deposition involving Dixon.
The judge described Blackburn’s remarks toward opposing counsel as including “homophobic, transphobic, and sexualized comments” and characterized the conduct as behavior that “shock[ed] the conscience.”
Blackburn had argued that medication played a role in his actions during the deposition.
However, Judge Willis rejected that explanation, writing that the medical record did not support Blackburn’s claim that medication caused the conduct in question.
The sanctions were part of broader disagreements that have continued throughout the legal proceedings.

Fat Joe’s Team Raises Additional Concerns
Fat Joe’s legal team has also challenged Blackburn’s recent court filings.
According to court documents, the rapper’s attorneys accused Blackburn of using inaccurate AI-generated citations in a legal filing.
They argued that the references presented in the document were misleading and asked the court to consider further sanctions.
In one filing, Fat Joe’s attorneys accused Blackburn of failing to meet his professional obligations to the court.
Those claims remain part of the ongoing legal dispute, and the court has not made a final determination on the allegations described in the filing.
How the Legal Battle Started
The dispute began in April 2025, when Fat Joe filed a defamation lawsuit against Dixon and Blackburn over statements he says damaged his reputation.
Dixon later responded with a $20 million countersuit containing allegations against Fat Joe, which the rapper has denied.
The case has continued to expand as both sides pursue their claims through the legal system.
Blackburn’s attempt to withdraw from representing Dixon introduces another challenge in a lawsuit already marked by significant legal disagreements.
Why It Matters
Celebrity legal battles often attract public attention because they involve high-profile figures, but court proceedings can take unexpected turns as attorneys, evidence, and legal strategies evolve.
In this case, Blackburn’s withdrawal request focuses on his attorney-client relationship with Dixon, while the broader lawsuit continues involving multiple parties.
The judge’s decision on the withdrawal request could affect how the case proceeds for Dixon moving forward.
For Fat Joe, the lawsuit represents an ongoing effort to address statements he says harmed his reputation.
For Dixon and Blackburn, the case has become a complicated legal fight involving competing claims, courtroom disputes, and changing legal representation.
As the proceedings continue, the next developments will likely depend on how the court handles Blackburn’s request and the remaining claims from both sides.
