Gamit Joe Discusses New EP ‘Wod Jafwonji,’ Life After Loss, and His Music Journey

Gamit Joseph, widely known as Gamit Joe, is a Ugandan record producer, singer-songwriter, and A&R with a notable contribution to the Ugandan music scene. His journey in the music industry has been marked by several successful projects, and now, he is ready to take his career to greater heights with his new six-track EP, “Wod Jafwonji.”

What’s Behind the Title “Wod Jafwonji”?

The title “Wod Jafwonji”, which translates to “Son of a Teacher” in his native language Dhopadhola, is a tribute to Gamit Joe’s parents, both of whom were teachers. He wanted the title to connect him to his past and honor the legacy they left behind. While there isn’t a song titled “Wod Jafwonji” on the EP itself, the sentiment encapsulates the essence of the project. Gamit Joe says, “It gave me a feeling and a sense of belonging. I am proud of what they gave me: life, and being learned.”

Inspirations Behind the Tracks

The songs on “Wod Jafwonji” cover various aspects of life, love, and struggle. “Akello”, a classic reggae track, tells the story of a man who tries to fix his life but is abandoned by his wife, who seeks a better life in the city. The next four tracks, “Cecilia”, “Daktari”, “Best Friend”, and “Ma Baby”, are all about love, portraying positive and heartfelt emotions. “Okuwebwa”, the final track, is a commentary on the modern-day relationships where love is often tied to material wealth: “No Money, No Love.”

The Making of the EP: Collaborations and Production

Gamit Joe didn’t take this journey alone. He collaborated with several talented individuals to bring his vision to life. From the writing process to production and mixing, Gamit Joe worked closely with Amazon, Jay Jay, and his nephew Kreed Marvin. He also teamed up with instrumentalists like Prosper Solo and Tony Solo for live guitar, and Isaac the Painkiller, who featured on the saxophone in “Daktari.”

For production and mixing, Gamit Joe handled most of the work, with support from Ginniman and Chief D. The final touches on the mastering were completed by Rickie Lance, a long-time friend. Gamit Joe also credits Nesto, his signed artist under Titanium Rekodz, for offering valuable advice throughout the process.

The Popularity of “Okuwebwa”

One song that has gained significant attention is “Okuwebwa”, a track that explores the financial pressures in relationships. Gamit Joe explains, “Today you can’t date without money. Women are meant to be on the receiving end; ‘No Money, No Love,’ especially in Kampala.” The song has resonated with many listeners, and Gamit Joe acknowledges its popularity with a laugh, “It’s based on reality.”

Aspirations for the Future

Looking ahead, Gamit Joe hopes that his music will reach audiences far and wide. “I am praying for my music to just be everywhere, not in dots but anthems in people’s sound systems, phones, and home soundbars. My target is the international scene, but Uganda should give me a proper ear.” He also aspires to collaborate with international artists in the future.

Challenges and Perseverance in the Music Industry

Gamit Joe reflects on the changing landscape of the Ugandan music industry. With the rise of social media and digital platforms, he sees both challenges and opportunities. While it’s become easier to promote music online, it’s also created a more competitive space. However, Gamit Joe remains optimistic about the future and is excited about where the industry is headed.

Despite the challenges, Gamit Joe has remained resilient in his pursuit of a successful music career. After the tragic loss of his mother in 2021, he admits that he struggled with his purpose. “When I lost my mom, I kinda felt like I had lost purpose. I released a song the following year, ‘Tomorrow,’ but soon my fire just went down.” Yet, after regaining his focus, he’s bounced back and is now more determined than ever to make a lasting impact.

With his new EP “Wod Jafwonji”, Gamit Joe is hoping to make a lasting mark on both the local and international music scenes. He expects the EP to elevate his career and even pave the way for live shows later in the year. “I believe this EP will change my life if I play my cards right. I’m sure one of these songs will change my career,” he shares with confidence.
