Hecklers Taunt VP J.D. Vance With Bizarre “Couch” Rumor in D.C.

Vice President J.D. Vance can’t seem to escape the internet’s strangest rumor — and this week, hecklers made sure of it.

On Wednesday, Vance stepped out in Washington, D.C., alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. The trio made their way through Union Station, casually picking up Shake Shack before heading off to a scheduled visit with National Guard troops.

But instead of cheers, Vance was met with jeers. A crowd of hecklers screamed at him, calling him a “couch fer”** and shouting for him to “go f** a couch.”

    The Viral “Couch” Rumor Explained

If you’re wondering what couches have to do with the Vice President of the United States — here’s the backstory.

In the lead-up to last year’s election, a bogus excerpt supposedly from Vance’s memoir Hillbilly Elegy went viral online. The fake passage claimed that Vance had a sexual encounter with a couch as a teenager.

Even though the excerpt was debunked and confirmed to be false, the rumor quickly spiraled into memes, jokes, and social media taunts. For many critics, it became an easy — if bizarre — way to troll the Ohio senator-turned-VP.

And as Wednesday’s scene proved, that couch joke is still very much alive.

    Vance’s Reaction

Video from the confrontation shows Vance keeping his composure, continuing to walk through Union Station unfazed as the crowd hurled insults.

The Vice President is no stranger to controversy or online ridicule. From sparking outrage among child-free cat owners with past comments, to becoming a recurring meme across political Twitter, Vance has become a lightning rod for internet culture — and this latest viral moment just adds fuel to the fire.

    Bigger Things on His Plate

Despite the noise, Vance wasn’t just on a fast-food run. Shortly after the Shake Shack pickup, he joined Hegseth and Miller to address National Guard troops stationed in D.C.

The VP delivered remarks encouraging the soldiers to “keep their spirits up” as they continue to work on restoring order in the capital. The officials also handed out Shake Shack burgers and fries as a morale booster.

In other words, while hecklers were busy yelling about couches, Vance was focused on bigger-picture politics.

    Social Media Reacts

Naturally, the clip blew up across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram. Memes and comments poured in within hours:

    • “Can’t believe the Vice President of the U.S. is still running from a couch rumor. 2025 is wild.”
    • “Say what you want about politics — but the internet never forgets.”
    • “He took it better than I would have. I’d never leave the house again.”
    • “This is the weirdest insult to stick with a politician ever — and yet here we are.”

For better or worse, the “couch” narrative has become a strange but persistent part of Vance’s public image.

    The Pop Radar Take

Love him or hate him, J.D. Vance is learning that once the internet brands you with a meme, there’s no escaping it. While he may be the Vice President of the United States, to hecklers on the street — he’s still the butt of one of the internet’s oddest viral rumors.
