Leo DiCaprio Spills Regret Over Passing on ‘Boogie Nights’ Role

Leonardo DiCaprio may be one of Hollywood’s most decorated stars, but even he has career regrets — and one of them involves turning down a now-iconic role in Boogie Nights.

In a candid sit-down for Esquire with legendary filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson — who directed the 1997 cult classic — Leo confessed he still thinks about passing on the movie that’s widely considered a defining film of the decade.

“I regret turning down the lead role,” Leo admitted. “It was a profound movie of my generation.”

    The Role That Got Away

Boogie Nights, a gritty, stylish drama set in the late 1970s porn industry, starred Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler — a young man whose adult film career skyrockets before spiraling into chaos.

Ironically, DiCaprio recommended Wahlberg for the role after working together in The Basketball Diaries. The decision, he says, was partly because Wahlberg was perfect for it — but also because Leo was already tied up with another little project… Titanic.

    Titanic vs. Boogie Nights

When Boogie Nights was filming, Leo was deep in production for James Cameron’s 1997 epic Titanic, which would go on to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time and launch him into global superstardom.

“I can’t imagine anyone but Mark in that part,” Leo told Anderson. “But still, that film was a masterpiece. I wish I’d been a part of it.”

It’s the kind of “what if” moment Hollywood fans love to obsess over: Would Leo have taken home an Oscar decades earlier if he’d traded the icy waters of the Atlantic for the wild ride of California’s porn scene?

    Inside the Star-Studded 90s Porn-Drama World

Directed by Anderson at just 27 years old, Boogie Nights featured a dream ensemble cast:

    • Heather Graham as Rollergirl — an adult film star who never takes off her skates.
    • Julianne Moore as Amber Waves — a maternal figure in the adult film world with her own personal struggles.
    • Burt Reynolds as director Jack Horner, in one of his most memorable later-career roles.

The film earned three Oscar nominations and cemented Anderson as one of Hollywood’s most daring storytellers.

Why It Took 20+ Years for Leo & PTA to Collaborate

Despite wanting to work together since the ‘90s, DiCaprio and Anderson didn’t actually team up until their new project, One Battle After Another.

“I’ve been trying to work with Paul for two decades,” Leo revealed. “It just had to be the right film.”

For Anderson, the feeling was mutual — and the Esquire conversation had the tone of two creatives who had finally crossed paths at the perfect time.

    Would History Have Changed?

Some fans are now wondering if taking Boogie Nights could have shifted DiCaprio’s award trajectory. He famously didn’t win his first Oscar until The Revenant in 2016 — nearly 20 years after Boogie Nights was released.

At the same time, Titanic became a cultural juggernaut, winning 11 Oscars and forever cementing Leo’s “king of the world” status.

It’s safe to say Leo’s career turned out just fine — but even global superstars have those “sliding doors” moments that make them wonder.

“Sometimes you have to choose between two great options — but the one you don’t pick will always be the one you wonder about.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

    Fans React

Social media has been buzzing with reactions since the interview dropped:

    • “Leo as Dirk Diggler? My brain can’t process that.”
    • “We got Titanic instead. No regrets.”
    • “Still wish he’d worked with Heather Graham in the 90s.”

    What’s Next for Leo

With One Battle After Another on the horizon, DiCaprio is once again teaming up with some of the industry’s most celebrated talents. And while he may never get to skate through the porn-filled streets of ‘70s San Fernando Valley, his filmography continues to be one of the most enviable in Hollywood.

Stay tuned to TPR for more exclusive updates on Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming projects and behind-the-scenes Hollywood revelations.
