Lil Wayne Admits He Didn’t Know Lil Durk Was In Jail: Fans Left Confused

As anticipation builds for Tha Carter VI, Lil Wayne opened up in a rare interview with Rolling Stone‘s Andre Gee—offering insight into both his creative process and personal detachment from the current rap landscape.

While the profile explored a wide range of topics, one moment caught the internet’s attention: Lil Wayne’s apparent obliviousness to Lil Durk’s ongoing legal troubles.

Backstage at the College Football Playoff National Championship, where Wayne was set to perform, Gee spotted two “Free Lil Durk” shirts in the rapper’s dressing room. Curious, he asked Wayne if he knew Durk was incarcerated. The rapper casually responded that he didn’t—leaving fans confused.

Lil Durk is currently behind bars in connection with a suspected murder-for-hire plot. Prosecutors allege he ordered a hit targeting fellow rapper Quando Rondo, which led to the fatal shooting of one of Rondo’s associates.

The case has major implications in the hip-hop world, yet Wayne’s unfamiliarity with it sparked questions about how in-touch he really is with modern rap culture. Despite Lil Durk often crediting Wayne as an influence, the two have never collaborated. Whether the shirts were a quiet show of solidarity or simply a styling oversight remains unclear.

This wasn’t the only sign of Wayne’s detachment during the interview. When Gee brought up Watch the Throne—the iconic 2011 collaboration between Jay-Z and Kanye West—Wayne seemed confused at first, only recognizing it after a few songs were mentioned. This is particularly surprising, considering Jay-Z allegedly threw subliminal shots at Cash Money on that album—shots that supposedly led to a response from Wayne himself.

Still, Wayne harbors no public grudge against Jay-Z. Even following the recent Super Bowl halftime show, which sparked speculation about Jay’s role in artist selection, Wayne appeared unfazed.

These moments reflect a long-standing pattern in Wayne’s career: operating in his own bubble, often indifferent to the drama and headlines around him. While his focus on music remains razor-sharp, his awareness of the broader hip-hop world seems selective at best.

As Tha Carter VI approaches, fans are once again reminded why Wayne remains such an enigmatic figure—brilliant, unpredictable, and utterly unbothered.
