The 1-Seeds: The Elite Contenders

Auburn Tigers

Region: South | Record: 28-5 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
Auburn enters the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, despite a rocky finish to the regular season. The Tigers lost their final two games, but their body of work speaks for itself. With six wins against top-15 KenPom teams, Auburn boasts one of the most balanced squads in the nation. Johni Broome, a Wooden Award contender, has been a force on both ends of the floor, averaging 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. Bruce Pearl’s team is deep, experienced, and hungry for their first national title.

Duke Blue Devils

Region: East | Record: 31-3 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
Duke’s youth movement has been nothing short of spectacular. Led by freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, the Blue Devils have defied expectations with a 19-1 run to close the regular season. Flagg, a two-way superstar, anchors a defense ranked fourth in adjusted efficiency. However, injuries to Flagg (ankle) and key defender Maliq Brown (shoulder) could be a concern. If healthy, Duke has the talent to cut down the nets for the first time since 2015.

Houston Cougars

Region: Midwest | Record: 30-4 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars are back with their best offensive team in years. L.J. Cryer (43% from three) and Milos Uzan have been instrumental in Houston’s rise. The Cougars’ defense remains elite, but their improved scoring makes them a legitimate title threat. With a 19-1 record in the brutal Big 12, Houston is poised for a deep run, provided J’Wan Roberts (ankle) is healthy.

Florida Gators

Region: West | Record: 30-4 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
Todd Golden’s decision to move Walter Clayton Jr. to point guard has paid dividends. The Gators boast the third-most efficient offense in the country, averaging 84.8 points per game. With wins over Auburn, Tennessee, and Alabama, Florida has proven they can hang with the best. If Clayton and his supporting cast stay hot, the Gators could bring home their first title since 2007.

The 2-Seeds: Strong Challengers

Michigan State Spartans

Region: South | Record: 27-6 | Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
Tom Izzo’s Spartans are built on defense, ranking among the top five in the nation. Jase Richardson, son of Michigan State legend Jason Richardson, has emerged as the team’s go-to scorer. While their offense can be inconsistent, their grit and toughness make them a tough out in March.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Region: East | Record: 25-8 | Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
Alabama’s high-octane offense, led by Mark Sears (19.2 PPG), is a nightmare for opponents. However, their defense has been shaky, surrendering 85+ points in 11 games. If Grant Nelson’s injury limits him, the Tide’s title hopes could take a hit.

Tennessee Volunteers

Region: Midwest | Record: 27-7 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
The Vols’ defense is the best in the country, per KenPom. Zakai Zeigler’s improved play and the addition of transfers Chaz Lanier and Igor Milicic Jr. have kept Tennessee in the title conversation. Rick Barnes’ squad has the tools to make a magical run.

St. John’s Red Storm

Region: West | Record: 30-4 | Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
Rick Pitino has worked his magic in New York, turning St. John’s into a defensive juggernaut. RJ Luis Jr. has been a revelation, and the Red Storm’s profile resembles Pitino’s past championship teams. Don’t sleep on this squad.

Cinderella Watch: Teams to Keep an Eye On

McNeese Cowboys (12-Seed)

Region: Midwest | Record: 27-6 | Tournament Ceiling: Sweet 16
Will Wade has resurrected his career at McNeese, leading the Cowboys to back-to-back NCAA tournaments. With a potent offense and stifling defense, McNeese could be this year’s Cinderella.

Grand Canyon Lopes (14-Seed)

Region: West | Record: 26-7 | Tournament Ceiling: Round of 32
Bryce Drew’s Lopes are a defensive powerhouse with a knack for pulling off upsets. After beating Saint Mary’s last year, they’re hungry for more.

High Point Panthers (13-Seed)

Region: Midwest | Record: 29-5 | Tournament Ceiling: Sweet 16
The Panthers enter the tournament on a 14-game winning streak. With a top-20 offense, they’re a dangerous matchup for any higher seed.

  3. Rick Pitino’s Redemption Tour
