Memphis Bleek Says Jay-Z Was Frustrated by Concert Delay

Memphis Bleek says Jay-Z kept to himself backstage after a lengthy delay before the rapper's final Yankee Stadium concert eventually got underway.

Jay-Z‘s final Yankee Stadium concert may have ended with surprise appearances from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jeezy, Usher, Pharrell, and several other stars, but according to Memphis Bleek, the hours leading up to the show were anything but celebratory.

The longtime Jay-Z collaborator says the rap icon was visibly frustrated backstage as thousands of fans waited for the delayed performance to begin. While concertgoers dealt with long lines and uncertainty outside the stadium, Bleek says Jay-Z kept his emotions largely to himself before eventually taking the stage and delivering the show fans had been waiting for.

The comments offer a rare glimpse behind the curtain of one of the summer’s biggest hip-hop events.

Memphis Bleek Describes Jay-Z’s Backstage Mood

Speaking with TMZ in New York City on Monday, Memphis Bleek was asked what Jay-Z was like backstage during the lengthy delay before Sunday’s concert.

According to Bleek, the answer was simple.

He said Jay-Z was a “stone-faced killer” who wasn’t interested in talking to anyone while waiting to perform.

Bleek said the rapper was upset about the delay, which came after fans reportedly broke through a security checkpoint outside Yankee Stadium, leading to significant disruptions before the show could begin.

Rather than interacting with people backstage, Bleek described Jay-Z as remaining quiet while the situation unfolded.

The interview suggests the rapper’s focus remained on whether the show would ultimately be able to proceed.

A Four-Hour Delay Before the Music Started

The concert was originally scheduled to begin much earlier in the evening.

Instead, fans waited for more than four hours before Jay-Z finally walked onto the stage at approximately 12:20 a.m.

Bleek admitted he wasn’t sure the performance would happen at all.

According to him, there was concern the event might be shut down if Jay-Z didn’t begin performing before midnight.

Despite those worries, the show ultimately moved forward, allowing fans to experience the final night of Jay-Z’s three-show Yankee Stadium celebration.

Once onstage, the rapper performed a career-spanning set that featured an impressive lineup of surprise guests, helping transform a difficult start into a memorable conclusion.

    Fans Faced a Late Night

The lengthy delay didn’t just test the patience of fans waiting outside the stadium.

According to the raw information, some attendees later complained about having to head to work after staying up well into the night to watch the concert.

Bleek acknowledged those frustrations during his interview.

He joked that fans considering calling in sick the next morning could draw inspiration from one of Jay-Z’s famous songs, though the specific track was not identified in the provided information.

The conversation also turned to the possibility of fines related to noise restrictions or curfew violations.

Bleek responded with what the raw information describes as a humorous answer, though the details of that response were not included.

Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium residency celebrated two milestones in his legendary career—the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint.

Across three nights, the concerts featured an array of surprise appearances, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Jeezy, Usher, Pharrell, Clipse, Swizz Beatz, Jermaine Dupri, The-Dream, and other notable artists.

The final show, despite its delayed start, became one of the weekend’s biggest entertainment stories because of both the guest lineup and the logistical challenges surrounding the event.

Memphis Bleek, who has worked alongside Jay-Z since the early days of Roc-A-Fella Records, remains one of the people closest to the rapper’s career, making his backstage observations particularly notable.

    Why It Matters

Fans typically see only the polished performance that unfolds onstage.

Bleek’s comments provide a glimpse into the pressure artists face when major stadium events encounter unexpected disruptions.

While the audience experienced long waits and uncertainty, his account suggests Jay-Z was dealing with those same frustrations behind the scenes while hoping the show would still be able to move forward.

In the end, the concert proceeded, and the focus shifted back to the music.

Even for one of hip-hop’s biggest stars, circumstances beyond an artist’s control can reshape an entire evening.

According to Memphis Bleek, Jay-Z chose not to vent publicly or engage backstage during the delay. Instead, he remained focused until it was finally time to perform. When the lights came on and the music started, fans saw the version of Jay-Z they had come to watch—one who delivered despite a challenging start to the night.

The delay may have tested everyone’s patience, but Memphis Bleek says once Jay-Z finally stepped onto the Yankee Stadium stage, he did exactly what fans expected: put on a memorable show.
