Pharrell Williams is gearing up for what he calls a “very impactful, beautiful night” as he co-chairs the 2025 Met Gala for the first time on May 5. The Grammy-winning artist, producer, and fashion visionary expressed excitement over the event’s theme, which will spotlight Black culture, creativity, and excellence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    A Tribute to Black Brilliance

Speaking on The Run-Through With Vogue podcast, Williams shared that the gala will be a powerful tribute to “all things Black culture and excellence,” adding that the night will serve as a celebration of progress, resilience, and innovation.

“It’s going to be a very impactful, beautiful night where we celebrate the color Black,” he said. “We celebrate the things that come from that color. We celebrate the mentality. We celebrate the plight. We celebrate the progress and the success. And we celebrate the potential.”

He went on to highlight the diversity of Black excellence: “We see it in all different forms—from authors to architects to artists to academics and athletes, all A-words,” he quipped. “That’s what that night is all about. It’s like the best of the best, top of the top.”

This Year’s Theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”

The 2025 Met Gala theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The theme is expected to influence not only the evening’s fashion but also its deeper cultural tone—placing a spotlight on how Black communities have shaped global aesthetics through style, struggle, and sophistication.

Pharrell hopes that the evening’s energy and cultural significance will translate through the photographs and coverage. “That’s what that night is going to be,” he said, “the manifestation of using the platform to celebrate us and all of our enthusiasts.”

He added, “That means people who are not necessarily Black, but just, like, enthusiasts of the Black culture and enthusiasts of the Black color and enthusiasts of everything that has something to do with Black and Brown.”

    Star-Studded Red Carpet Coverage

As always, the red carpet will be a spectacle in itself. Vogue’s official livestream of the Met Gala will be hosted by Teyana Taylor, La La Anthony, and SNL star Ego Nwodim. Social media favorite Emma Chamberlain will return as a special correspondent.

The livestream will be available via Vogue’s digital platforms, YouTube, and TikTok starting at 6 p.m. ET on May 5.

    A Night to Remember

With Pharrell Williams helping steer the vision, the 2025 Met Gala is shaping up to be more than just a glamorous affair—it’s expected to be a historic celebration of Black influence across culture, art, fashion, and identity. It’s not just about style—it’s about substance, recognition, and the undeniable power of Black expression.
