The music industry is in shock following the tragic death of beloved singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, who passed away in a house fire early Thursday morning while staying at a friend’s home in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Sobule, best known for her 1995 hit “I Kissed a Girl,” was visiting a married couple — close friends — when a devastating fire engulfed their residence. According to her longtime agent Craig Grossman, the homeowners managed to escape the blaze, initially believing Jill was right behind them. It was only after reaching safety that they realized the singer was still trapped inside.

    A Tragic Misunderstanding Amid Chaos

In a heartbreaking account, Grossman told TMZ that the couple was overwhelmed with survivor’s guilt and are devastated over the loss of their friend. They had assumed everyone had escaped together during the chaos.

“They thought Jill was with them when they ran outside,” Grossman said. “But by the time they realized she wasn’t, the flames had taken over. There was no going back.”

Sobule was reportedly staying in the home temporarily and was not known to smoke or use drugs. Her friends and representatives emphasize that there was no clear reason for the fire, making the tragedy even more confounding.

Investigation Underway by Ramsey County Medical Examiner

A spokesperson for the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to TMZ that investigators are actively working to determine the exact cause and manner of Jill Sobule’s death. One of the central questions being examined is whether Sobule was alive when the fire began — or whether she had already passed beforehand due to other causes.

As part of the investigation, Jill is being tested for carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as for drugs and alcohol, which is standard protocol in such cases. Results are pending and could offer crucial insight into the moments before the fire erupted.

The home is considered a total loss, with fire officials describing the damage as extensive.

A Loss Felt Deeply in the Music Community

Jill Sobule was a respected figure in folk-pop and alt-rock circles. Her music, often rich with social commentary, humor, and honesty, struck a chord with listeners around the world. She broke boundaries in the 1990s with “I Kissed a Girl” — a song that addressed same-sex attraction years before it entered the mainstream conversation.

Over her decades-long career, Sobule released more than a dozen albums, collaborated with major artists, and composed for theater and film. She remained a dedicated and passionate performer, frequently engaging with her fan base through live shows, activism, and storytelling.

    Fans and Friends Pay Tribute

News of Jill’s passing sent waves of grief across social media. Musicians, fans, and celebrities alike shared heartfelt tributes, celebrating her talent, wit, and courage.

One fan wrote, “Jill Sobule gave voice to so many of us who didn’t see ourselves in mainstream music. Her loss is unspeakable.”

Another added, “She was fearless, funny, and kind. A legend in every sense of the word.”

Fellow musicians praised her lyrical brilliance and generous spirit, describing her as a trailblazer who remained humble and grounded throughout her career.

    Unanswered Questions Remain

As loved ones and fans mourn, questions remain about how such a tragedy could unfold so quickly. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and officials have not ruled out accidental electrical or structural failure.

Craig Grossman emphasized that no foul play is suspected, and that Jill was healthy and in good spirits prior to the incident.

    A Lasting Legacy

Beyond her musical accomplishments, Jill Sobule was a storyteller, activist, and inspiration to countless artists. Whether tackling political themes, personal struggles, or quirky observations, she brought a singular voice to the industry.

Her music will continue to resonate, and her influence will be felt for years to come.

As the investigation continues and more details emerge, one thing remains clear: Jill Sobule’s legacy is immortal — even as the world says goodbye far too soon.
